Social Impacts of the Use of IT By Haseena Khan
Local Community The local community is affected by the social impacts of the use of IT because there is a increase in online shopping due to the fact that more people prefer shopping online rather than going to there local shops as it saves time and money. In addition, the internet is being used more often by people everyday therefore people prefer reading the news online rather than looking at the local newspaper. Advantages: • Social networking websites such as Facebook can help organise and advertise local events which helps the local community. • Easier and cheaper to shop online and pay bills. • Advertising of businesses. • Disadvantages: • More people shopping online causing local shops to close down. • Scammers can take personal details. • Stalkers may find out information about you. • Cyber-bullying. • People tend not to trust the internet.
Availability of jobs There are fewer jobs mainly because robots are being created to carry out the jobs of human beings at a much faster rate, this increases unemployment in the UK. Also, the recession has affected businesses in the UK causing companies to close down and leading to people being unemployed. 20% of the UK population is suffering from unemployment. Moreover, the cost of living is rapidly increasingtherefore making it much more harder for the people that are unemployed. In addition, the government is cutting EMA and benefits this causes a major issue for people that mainly live on government money. Technology is improving, this can be both an advantage and disadvantage as tasks can be carried out quicker however this affects the availability of jobs.
Inequality of relation to Internet access There are several businesses that are trading online and there is lots of information and programmes on the internet this makes it difficult for the people that do not have internet access. People mainly don’t have internet access because broadband is not available in some rural areas, they can’t afford the price of internet access, don’t know how to browse the internet or some people have difficulties in using a computer this may be because there disabled. The increase in the use of the internet can be a problem for local businesses because they are losing there customers to online shopping. Also, if more businesses are trading online and the government is displaying information on there website and such this is unfair and can cause a problem for the people that don’t have internet access.
