Overview of Contact Lenses: Types, Advantages, and Disadvantages

Contact lenses are artificial devices that correct refractive errors and irregularities on the cornea's surface. They come in different types, including hard lenses, rigid gas permeable lenses, and soft lenses. Each type has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Hard lenses offer durability but may cause corneal abrasions, while RGP lenses provide good visual quality and control disease development. Soft lenses, on the other hand, are more comfortable and allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea. Despite their benefits in cosmetic enhancement and vision correction, contact lenses also carry risks such as red eye, infection, and dry eye.

  1. CONTACT LENS

  2. WHAT IS CONTACT LENS? •Artificial device who’s front surface substitute the anterior surface of cornea •Used for correction of: 1. Refractive error 2. Irregularities on front surface of cornea

  3. TYPES OF CONTACT LENSES: • Hard lens • Rigid gas permeable lens (RGP Lens) • Soft lens

  4. HARD LENS: • From PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) • High optical quality, stabiltiy, light weight, nontoxic, durable and cheap. • Diameter of 8.5 – 10mm • Disadvantages: 1. Restricting the tolerance 2. Corneal abrasion 3. Stable tear film

  5. RIGID GAS PERMEABLE LENS: • Material permeable to oxygen • Hard, but called as semi soft lenses Patients wear RGP contact lens to form a “contact lens-tear-cornea” system to correct irregular astigmatism, reduce aberrations, provide good visual quality, and control the development of the disease through mild “shaping” effect

  6. ADVANTAGES OF RGP LENS: • Allows for a wider range of colors. • Lets more data be used. • Can sometimes lead to more vibrant colors. • More flexible than CMYK.

  7. DISADVANTAGES OF RGP LENS: • RGB values are commonly not transferable between devices. • Not perceptually uniform. • Not perfect for identification of colors. • Difficult to determine specific color. • The difference between colors is not linear.

  8. WHAT IS SOFT LENS: Soft contact lenses are made of soft, flexible plastics that allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea—the clear dome that covers the colored part of the eye. This lens material may be easier to adjust to and provide better initial comfort than hard, or rigid gas permeable, contact lenses

  9. ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES: ADVANTAGES: • They deliver cosmetic enhancement. • They look natural. • They boost confidence. • They help with excessive light sensitivity. • They can address problems with double vision. • They can enhance contrast and color vision. DISAVANTAGES: • Red Eye • Dry Eye • Infection. • Corneal Vascularization. • Eye Ulcers. • Conjunctivitis.
