Axis Powers • Between Sept. 1940 and April 1941, Japan, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Bulgaria had joined the Axis Powers • Mussolini wanted to build another Italian Empire but fell in Greece and Egypt. • Hitler had hoped to take Libya and North Africa in early 1941 but the British stopped Erwin Rommel in October in the Battle of El Alamein.

Decision to drop the Bomb • Wanting a swift end to the war and hearing the success of the Manhattan Project, Truman made the decision to drop the atomic bomb. • August 6, 1945, a plane called the Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Instantly, 80,000 Japanese citizens were vaporized. Later an additional 100,000 perished from burns and radiation sickness. • August 9, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, 40,000 Japanese people perished.

Post War Policies • United Nations formed maintain international peace, security, and cooperation to solve cultural, economic and social problems. • Marshall Plan for Europe was a plan to offer financial aid to European countries damaged by war in an attempt to keep communism from spreading (containment) • MacArthur’s plan for Japan wrote a new constitution that allowed for democracy
