  3. What is it? (part 1) It’s this – or sometimes And it stands for Really Simple Syndication But you don’t really need to know that… “An RSS file is a small text file that provides a concise summary of the content of a web page”, Burks Oakley II Which is more than you need to know..

  4. What is it ? (part 2) What you do need to know… It’s a mechanism by which new content is delivered to your desktop • You ‘subscribe’ the RSS • RSS is revised every time the website is updated – new content or edited • In other words RSS lets you know there is new content • (it’s free) Example

  5. What does this mean? You can get the latest updates for: • Websites (in. StudyNet modules) • Blogs – new entries (Tim Wilson) • Wikis - new content/pages & CHANGES • Podcasts – latest weekly audio

  6. RSS Feed Aggregators • Stores your RSS subs • Let’s you know when new content is added • Desktop – SharpReader • Web based – www.bloglines.com • Email versions on the way

  7. How do I subscribe? • On the website locate the RSS icon • Click on it to load a ‘strange’ page of code • Copy the web address (URL) • Go to the RSS aggregator & use the subscribe options
