  1. Journal 3-23-06 Thursday FIRST, Explain the meaning of the following hyperboles (exaggerations): I nearly died laughing I was hopping mad. I tried a thousand times. His feet were as big as a barge. NEXT, select one hyperbole from the list and create an illustration (picture).

  2. Purpose • What are you learning? • How to understand hyperbole. Also, review the concepts of stanza, rhyme scheme, internal and end rhyme, and refrain • Why are you learning this? • To understand how to group the parts of a poem, so it will be easier to read and comprehend.

  3. Grammar- On a separate sheet of paper, write one sentence combining all the details of each group of sentences. You will be creating adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases. • The sailboat drifted. It was graceful. It drifted in the breeze. The breeze was gentle. • The actor performed the role. She was gifted. The role was the lead. • Rose put her bike away. She put it in the shed. The shed was old. • Ted looked through the mail. He was eager. The mail was on the table. • Anne took a walk. She walked through the forest. The trees were tall pines. It was late afternoon.

  4. Crafting the Lesson (me) • Hyperbole- is a figure of speech. An exaggeration or overstatement used for emphasis. ex. I nearly died laughing. My dad had a cow when he saw my grades. I said that a million times!

  5. Crafting the lesson (we) • Read each item below. If the item contains hyperbole, write H in the blank. If the item does not have hyperbole, write N. • My cousin loves to read. She eats up a good book in no time. • Janet has the longest hair of anyone I know. She can almost sit on the ends of it. • Max was so hungry he inhaled his lunch. • Maggie was so embarrassed she had to leave the room. • Our basketball team is really good this year. • Andre hit the baseball so hard that the crack of the bat could be heard in the next county. • The rain poured like Niagara Falls for two straight days. • His feet are so big that he has to order his shoes from a special catalog. • Aretha is the greatest basketball player in the world. She can win a game with her eyes closed. • One table at the picnic site will probably not be big enough for all of us.

  7. Crafting the Lesson (You) You – • Read “Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out” by Shel Silverstein. • Underline the end rhyme • Label rhyme scheme • Circle all examples of hyperbole in the poem. • Answer the Critical Viewing question at the bottom of page 583.
