  2. PartI: Each of Britain’s 52 police forces are responsible for law enforcement in its own area. In addition there are various national and regional connections(ex:in areas of training or the transfer of criminal records), and local forces cooperate with each other. Some special services, such as the Fraud squad (who investigate financial crimes),are available to any local force in England and Wales.

  3. In general, local police forces work independently under their own Chief Constables. Each force is maintained by a local police authority . The exception is London, where the Metropolitan Police are responsible to the Home Secretary.

  4. Police duties cover a wide range of activities, from traffic control to more specialized departments such as river policing. In addition the police authorities in England and Wales employ well over 50,000 civilians and over 3,000 traffic wardens.

  5. Britain has relatively few police approximately one policeman for every 400 people-and traditionally they are armed only with truncheons except in special circumstances. Recent years have seen some major changes in policy in response to industrial disputes and inner city violence in Great Britain.

  6. There as been an increase in the number of special units trained in crowd and riot control and in the use of firearms, a controversial area for the British police. The number of police has risen along with the crime rate. In recent years, they have become more accountable as a result of highly publicized cases of police corruption and racism.

  7. Q:Three examples of basic police work The police's main work is the upkeep of peace like providing a presence at known trouble hot spots like city centers. To prevent and detect crime. The police will also investigate allegations of any offence that is put before them. If the allegations prove to be true, then they will report the crime and have it investigated.

  8. Q: The people in charge of the police in Britain • The chief constables are the top policemen in charge in their territorial police force in Britain with the exception of the City of London Police and the Metropolitan Police. • The men in charge of the City of London Police and the Metropolitan Police are knows as police Commissioners.

  9. The current Commissioner of the City of London Police is Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe. • The current Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police is Adrian Leppard.
