  1. EA – flooding risk

  2. Land use and flooding Adam Baylis Research Scientist – Communities and Flooding 21 April 2010 Thanks to John Ewen, Newcastle University

  3. Outline • Is land use important for flooding? • How does SCaMP fit? • What did we do? • What did we find? • Recommendations for SCaMP2?

  4. Is land use important for flooding?

  5. FD2114 “…there are no clear examples…” FD2120 “… effects of land management are masked by climate variability…”

  6. SCaMP – Substantial new data

  7. What did we do? • Worked in Forest of Bowland • Monitored catchment flows • Nested multi-scale approach • Two year monitoring period • Project record • Initial analysis

  8. Problems? • Short monitoring period • Equipment theft • Remote area

  9. What did we find? • Land use had little impact • Different between events But, it’s just one case study

  10. Why did we get these results? • Land use has no effect? • Monitoring period? • Catchment choice? • Configuration of measures? • Measures need to mature?

  11. What else did we find? • Multi-scale approach worked • Good to work with modellers • Project record for audit
