  1. HumanImmunodeficiencyVirus • The virus that damages the cells in the immune system that fights off infection and disease. • As the virus destroys the cells the immune system gets weak and breaks down. • AIDS is the last stage of HIV infection.

  2. Acquired, not inherited but obtained. Immuno, immune system protects us from diseases. Deficiency, meaning lacking or weakened, for AIDS it’s the immune system. S yndrome, group of symptoms that indicate a person is sick.

  4. AIDS can NOT be cured. Usually not from the HIV infection directly but from some other disease that HIV has allowed their body to contract. (because their body can not fight off the disease/illness ex: pneumonia)

  6. NOT Transmitted by… • Air • Environmental surfaces • Kissing • Shaking Hands • Hugging • Salvia, tears, sneezing, sweat, urine, feces Insects/Bug bites

  7. United States • At the end of 2006, an estimated 1.1 million people in the United States were living with diagnosed or undiagnosed HIV/AIDS. • An estimated 4,883 young people (13-24) received a diagnosis of HIV infection or AIDS, representing about 13% of the people diagnosed during 2004.
