Advanced Placement

Bluevale Collegiate Institute offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses for passionate and motivated students who want to challenge themselves academically. These courses, available in various subjects, provide opportunities for individualized enrichment and preparation for university-level work. Additionally, Bluevale offers a leadership-focused program called Choose to Lead, where students learn and apply leadership skills in specialized classes and participate in extracurricular activities. Students in the Choose to Lead program also have the opportunity to work towards earning the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

  2. Why AP at Bluevale?

  3. Pre-AP Students are: Passionate about a subject area. Motivated to challenge themselves academically. Interested in extending their learning beyond that of their peers. Exhibiting academic oriented initiative both in the classroom and at home.

  4. Pre-AP at Bluevale • Grade 9 Pre-AP is offered in: • Math • French • English * Pre-AP Science is available in Grade 10

Individualized Enrichment “We like the individuality the AP program affords our students,” says Geoff Roberts, headmaster of Crescent School, an all-boys school in Toronto. “Some boys may want to take just one or two courses while another might want to take five – the AP program gives them that flexibility.” The Globe and Mail, September 27th, 2011

  6. AP at Bluevale • AP grade 12 courses are offered in: • Biology • Chemistry • English • French • Calculus • Physics • Economics

Your Future Pathway Taking AP courses and/or AP exams will: • Allow students to study in congregated enrichment classes • Be internationally recognized • Be considered by universities to count as first year university elective(s) • Prepare you for work at the second year university level • Encourage students to have, on average, higher grades and a higher university program completion rate than their non-AP counterparts (source: Answers in the tool box: Academic intensity, attendance patterns, and bachelor’s degree attainment.Adelman, C.   8. The role of Advanced Placement courses in university success: “AP examination scores are among the very best predictors of [university] performance. The subject-specific, curriculum-intensive AP exams are the epitome of achievement tests, in this sense, and their validity in predicting . . . performance should not be surprising.” Geiser, S., & Santelices, V.   9. French Studies At Bluevale In conjunction with our Pre-AP and Academic French programs, students also have the opportunity to pursue a DELF accreditation. In Gr. 12, an AP French student could write the AP exam and sit for a DELF certification in the same year.

  10. Choose To Lead Bluevale Collegiate Institute 2018-2019

Program Highlights • Students learn in leadership focused classes ,with fellow CHOOSE TO LEAD students. • Students participate in various enrichment and extra-curricular activities designed to foster and strengthen student leadership. • Students work towards earning Bronze, Silver and Gold standards in the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme.

Leadership Focused Courses • Grade 9:  Academic Science/Geography and Introduction to Business (Open) • Grade 10*:  Academic History, Open Level Careers/Civics • Grade 11*:  Recreation and Fitness Leadership • Grade 12*:  Business Leadership Fundamentals (Dual Credit course with WLU) • *KRT Student Council Course (optional)

  13. Students in the CHOOSE TO LEAD program are grouped together with program classmates in six specialized classes in grades nine through twelve.  Course content provides unique leadership perspectives that allow students to apply knowledge and skills across the curriculum.

  14. About The Award • The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award was founded in 1956 by His Royal Highness, The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh K.G. K.T.  The Award came to Canada in 1963 and currently runs in 130 countries around the world.  • Bluevale CI is the ONLY school in Waterloo Region that currently supports students working towards their “Duke of Ed” award.

What is the “Duke of Ed”? • Community Service:Be a local hero by providing volunteer service to others and your community. • Personal Skill Development: Do something different; develop a personal interest, social or practical skill. • Physical Recreation:Gain a sense of achievement and good health through physical activity. Virtually any sport, dance or fitness activity can count.

Award…cont’d • Adventurous Journey: Go on an expedition and find yourself!  Develop self-reliance by planning, training and completing a journey of discovery. • Residential Project:For Gold level only – Broaden your experience through living and working with others who aren’t your everyday friends for five days.

What does BCI offer? • Support for students in grades 9 through 12 with registration, record keeping and ideas for activities through their Choose to Lead classes • Adventurous Journey Opportunities • Bronze – 2 day trip in Waterloo/Laurel Creek • Silver – 3 day hiking trip in Northern Ontario • Gold – 4 day trip in Algonquin Park

  21. What characteristics should I possess to apply to either of these programs? • High level of academic motivation • Self-starter (should never have to be asked if your homework is done) • Commitment to academic success
