  1. Geographic Regions of Africa Desert Semiarid Savanna Rainforest

  2. Desert • Hot and dry temperatures • Located in the north and the south • Very little rainfall – less than 10 inches per year • Low human population • Plant life – only survive if they need little moisture • Animal life – nocturnal animals – active during the night because of cooler temps, others move between water resources during the day • Some parts of the desert have no plant or animal life and are covered by soft sand

  3. Semiarid • Located between the savanna and the desert • Barren grassland with very hot temperatures • Little rainfall – between 10-20 inches per year • Agriculture is limited to areas where lakes and oases are located • Plant life – well adaptive plants that need little water can survive • Animal life – can survive if they find ways to store water

  4. Savanna • Largest and most varied climate region • Savanna area close to rainforests are heavily forested; near the deserts they are more open with few trees • Dry and rainy seasons • Plant life is abundant during the rainy seasons and during dry season majority dies; only the strong survive • Supports huge herds of animals: zebras, giraffes lions, cheetahs • Good water resources: lakes, rivers etc.

  5. Rainforest • Smallest region – along equator in West Africa • Heavy rainfall – 60 inches per year • Moderate temperatures – 70-90 degrees F • Diverse and abundant plant life • Array of different animals that mostly live in high forest treetops

  6. Thanks • Frisco ISD Sixth Grade Curriculum Development Team for creating great resources for our continental units.
