Recruiting Regulations NCAA Student Athlete Guide • Register with NCAA: (Div I & II) • Official & Unofficial Visits; On & Off Campus; Phone Calls • Athletically-Related Financial Aid (Div I & II only) • 2% of HS athletes are awarded athletic scholarships. • Renewable annually (with limited Div I exceptions). • Can be cancelled for any reason. • Vary in size. Ivy League and NESCAC have additional rules.
Scholarship Amounts Full Scholarships allowed to entire team only in Division I in: Football, M & W Basketball and W Gymnastics, Tennis & Volleyball. Full Scholarship Equivalents allowed in selected other sports:
How to approach and work with coaches • Resume & Cover letter. • Coach’s Website Form. • DVDs, You Tube, Student-Athlete’s Website. • Write their script for them. • Don’t assume they go to relevant sports data websites • Update! • Coaches develop credibility in Admission Offices. • Give them an easy case: SAT scores, grades & summer enrichment programs
The Application and Admission Process • Immediately (for Juniors): • Research colleges • Check SAT scores, acceptance rates & financial aid of colleges • Start visiting colleges • Take SAT (preferably twice) • By May 31 of junior year: Get all info to Coaches. • By August 31: Finish college visits and meetings with coaches. • During summer: Sense quality of the “touches” from coaches. • During September: Coaches finish discussions with Admission Offices and submit their lists.
The Application and Admission Process (cont.) By October 15: Finish SAT tests and college applications. Early November: Early Decision I applications due. December 15: Early Decision I replies from colleges. Dec. 15 – Jan. 15: Early Decision II applications due. Jan. 15 – Feb. 15: Early Decision II replies from colleges
