  1. Postmodernism Lesson 2

  2. 4. Tolerance Tolerance – sympathy for or participation in beliefs and practices differing from or conflicting with one’s own beliefs

  3. This has long been a practice in denominationalism and in many congregations of the church of Christ who have gone into error ‘UNITY-IN-DIVERSITY” The idea of agreeing to disagree

  4. Did our Lord tolerate, accept and never challenge? NO!

  5. Jn. 4:20-22 [20] Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. [21] Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

  6. [22] Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

  7. CHRISTIANITY IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A TOLERANT RELIGION! Mt. 13:33 [33] Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

  8. “Christianity is supposed to be like a militant army going forth to conquer the hearts of men and women” (Eskew)

  9. 2 Tim. 2:3 – we are soldiers in the Lord’s army [3] Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

  10. 1 Tim. 6:12 – we are to fight the good fight of faith [12] Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

  11. Eph. 6:17 – our sword is the Word of God [17] And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

  12. Mk. 16:15 – we are to spread the word throughout the whole world [15] And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

  13. Rom. 1:16-17 – it has the power to save lost souls [16] For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. [17] For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

  14. 5. Secularism In the previous point we noted that postmodern thinking practices tolerance of about everything – EXCEPT CHRISTIANITY

  15. Secular – not connected with religion “Through several Supreme Court decisions since 1962, opponents of the Christian religion have sought to throw God out of the schools and the minds of our children…

  16. The goal of a secular society is the gagging of God.” (Sanders, 26) ---If God can be silenced – by keeping His word from being taught, men are free to do as they please

  17. “Our society is seeking to rid itself of all things religious.” (Eskew) No prayer – no Bible reading – no “in God we trust” – no “one nation under God” – no crosses -

  18. (While we do not celebrate Christmas as the birth day of Jesus) --- No nativity scenes, no mention of the word “Christmas”

  19. Rom. 1:18-31 Read above passage

  20. How it has affected the Lord’s church: Minimizing preaching of the Word of God (discussions, skits, dramas, stories, etc.) Contemporary worship services complete with instrumental music

  21. Fellowship with the denominations The expanded use of women in the work and worship of the church A focus on “recreational” ministries

  22. False idea that the grace of God forgives people, even if they did not understand why they are baptized or how they are to be baptized

  23. Little or no emphasis on baptism – especially baptism for the remission of sins – the “pious unimmersed” are brethren Little opposition to social drinking, dancing, homosexuality, abortion,

  24. Jn. 8:31 [31] Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

  25. Col. 3:17 [17] And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

  26. What we can do to stop this Be able to recognize this error Screen preachers/teachers carefully Train young people in the fundamentals of the faith Preach/teach the Truth Defend the Truth

  27. Conclusion REMEMBER – Man left to himself is a very dangerous thing Man cannot direct his steps (Jer. 10:23)

  28. Man has tried to direct his own steps in the past --- and always with terrible results Judges 17:6

  29. Proverbs 3:5-8 [5] Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. [6] In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

  30. [7] Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. [8] It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

  31. Eccl. 12:13 [13] Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
