John Tyler. The 10 th President of the United States. Early Life. John was born on March 29 th , 1790 in Greenway, Virginia. John was named after his father, so this would make him John Tyler Jr. His mother, Mary Armistead, passed away when he was only seven.

  1. John Tyler The 10th President of the United States

  2. Early Life • John was born on March 29th, 1790 in Greenway, Virginia. • John was named after his father, so this would make him John Tyler Jr. • His mother, Mary Armistead, passed away when he was only seven. • Enrolled in the College of William and Mary when he was 12.

  3. Early Life (Part 2) • Graduated from College in 1807. • John’s father became governor of Virginia in 1808. John Jr. followed is his footsteps, and became governor in 1825. • John served as a member of the U.S House of Representatives (1816-1821) and in the U.S Senate. (1827-1836)

Presidential Life • John first served as Vice President to William Henry Harrison (Old Tippecanoe) in 1840. • Due to a sudden illness, Harrison died one month after he took upon the office as President. • After Harrison’s death, John was known as “His Accidency,” since he was the 10th Vice President and President of the United States. • He was a member of the Whig Party.

  5. Presidential Life (Part 2) • John’s first wife, Letitia Christian, died while John was in office. Two years later, he married Julia Gardiner. Together, he was the president that fathered the most children. • Tyler was very unpopular during his time as president. One newspaper, the Emancipator, published a story in 1841 saying that Tyler had sold his children! • John’s most important contribution to the United States was when he signed a bill which confirmed the annexation of Texas.

  6. The Later Years • John refused to seek re-election in 1844. since he had not contributed much. • After his term, John retired to his small farm in Virginia. • John later served as the Chancellor of the College of William and Mary.

  7. The Later Years (Part 2) • After his service as Chancellor, John worked to create the Southern Confederacy.’ • John had his last child in 1860, when he was 70 years old. • John died on January 18, 1862.
