  2. Watch the film adaptation of A Handful of Dust to 15.14 minutes What do Tony Last and Brenda represent about Waugh’s view of society

  3. Read through English Gothic chapter 2 (pages 40-45) What does this says about Brenda and what she represents in the society of the 1930’s? Add to your character profile of Brenda. Consider the irony of the statement in the last three sentences of the chapter.

  4. Read pages 46 – 49. Consider the role of women before the war. How is Brenda showing a different view of women in this part of the novel? Compare this view with Tony’s comment that John Andrew should be ‘considerate to people less fortunate that you, particularly women.’ (p.25)

  5. Watch the film adaptation of A Handful of Dust from 15.14 minutes to 25.30 minutes.

  6. Women From the text so far consider what makes Brenda a savage. What is Waugh’s view of women? Waugh’s first wife, Evelyn Gardner – known as She-Evelyn to Waugh's He-Evelyn - ran off with another man. The marriage was annulled.

  7. Read from page 56 – 57 Consider Brenda’s sneaky behaviour. • What techniques does Waugh use to present Brenda and what does this say about women / savagery? • How are the things that she says ironic? Write up your ideas for homework!

  8. Read page 57 – 60 • How is the affair presented? • What do the different characters’ opinions suggest about them? • How had Beaver been affected by the affair?

  9. Read page 62 (last paragraph) - 64 Discuss the following question: Tony and Brenda’s relationship is trivialised by Waugh. What does it say about society at the time?

  10. Watch the film adaptation of A Handful of Dust from 25.30 minutes – 31.08 minutes.

  11. Read 67-70 Consider Brenda and Tony’s contrasting moral values. Add to your character profiles of Brenda and Tony. Add to the appearance v’s reality mind map.

  12. Read 71 – 73 Consider what the longevity of the Old Hundredth represents.

  13. Read 74 – 79 With your partner discuss Tony and Brenda’s relationship. Add to your character profiles Waugh’s opinions and your own opinion about their relationship.

  14. Plenary Watch the film adaptation of A Handful of Dust from 31.08 minutes to 35.50 minutes.
