  2. Overview Elements of Effective Planning Language Arts Portfolio Language Arts mandates Mathematics mandates Planning for Special Education Students Planning Models At the bottom of each slide are the corresponding Framework for Teaching elements.

  3. Purpose for Planning Ensures that Common Core Standards are being addressed throughout the scope of the year. Gives direction and purpose to your daily instruction through your understanding of expected learning outcomes.

  4. Elements of Effective Planning • Activities directly correlate to the Common Core Standards • NJASK 3,4 and 5 measures the standards • Objectives are to be stated in terms of anticipated student outcomes • Objectives are to be measurable • Differentiated instruction • Emphasis on small group instruction versus whole group instruction • Should indicate that grade levels are communicating.

  5. Language Arts Portfolio Domain 1f Required tests and work samples that are to be administered, scored and collected throughout the year. Timelines…What do you notice? Rubrics/Benchmarks/DRAs/MAPs

  6. Language Arts MandatesKindergarten, First & Second Grades Domain 1a,1e, 1f Word Walls starting at the beginning of the year Writer’s Notebook beginning in September/October Guided Reading Groups by the end of September (low groups seen daily) Centers 4-5 times/week (min. 3 centers)

  7. Language Arts Mandates3rd – 5th Grade Domain 1a,1e, 1f Word Walls starting at the beginning of the year (cross content and ever changing!!!) Writer’s Notebook starting in September Writer’s Workshop (mini-lessons, conferencing etc.) happening daily beginning in October Guided Reading and centers 3-5 times per week (low groups seen daily)

  8. Mathematics Domain 1a,1e, 1f Pre/Post tests are used to measure student growth Instruction should be differentiated based on pre-testing data (meaning…?) Differentiated instruction and homework minimum 2 times/week Math Assessment Calendar

Addressing Special Needs’ Students Domain 1a,1b Utilize the regular education curriculum and respective guidelines while making the necessary modifications for the student Leveled readers are to be used during guided reading Using Writer’s Workshop provides the opportunity to reach the needs of your students (conferencing, mini-lessons etc.)

Planning Models Domain 1a,1c, 1d, 1e Madeline Hunter • Measurable Objectives • Standard of Student Performance • Anticipatory Set (“the hook”) • Teaching / Presentation of Content • Input via lecture, video etc…. • Modeling of expectations for the end product…. • Checking for understanding…. “Did they get it?”
