Reasoning for Test Format • Prepare you for Smarter Balance Testing • More detailed assessment of knowledge • Clearer misconceptions revealed • Emphasis on mastery of “level 1” questions
How is it Graded? • 1 point per question • No partial credit (same with S.B.T.) • In order to pass exam, you MUST answer ALL level 1 questions correctly (or NYP will be on your paper)
Reflections From Teachers • Some clear misconceptions revealed • Need to better teach HOW to answer levels of questions properly • Important to write extremely clear and detailed questions (which is why, for example, we had some flexibility with a few of the answers)
Misconceptions and Common Mistakes • Misconceptions • If a hypothesis states a claim, that specific claim must be addressed in experiment • Buoyancy = weight of water displaced (you do NOT have to fully submerge the boat before this can happen, and mass does NOT have to be added to it either) • Common Mistakes • S.I. Process must start with a question and end with communication of the results • Units • Phase change diagram • Particle movement AND arrangement
Now What? • Tomorrow = Student Level 1 Expert Ambassador Workshop • Level 1 expert ambassadors will guide NYP students to success (teach them) • NYP students need to ask necessary questions (let the E.A. know which Level 1 questions you need help with). • Do example problems together using page C4 in binder (levels of questioning sentence starters). • The point is to help each other and to use the knowledge in the room to reach as many students as quickly as possible.
Then What? • NYP retake will be Wednesday in class • New version tailored to the level 1 questions you missed • Will earn credit for correctly answered questions once you pass (up to an A- maximum can’t earn 100% on a level 1 retake) • 15-20 minutes • If you have already passed, you get to relax during this time reading your AR book • You must pass, so if you don’t on Wednesday, this process will continue.
Grades • End of semester is December 20 • All late work must be in by Wednesday, Dec 18th 1:30 pm if you want it to count in the semester grade • To qualify for STEM or Biology, you must have an A- or A in Science 8 (plus the math requirements) • Options are good!
Exam Pass Back • Look at exam • Identify which questions you got wrong • On a piece of binder paper, write the topic of the question you got wrong & the error your made • Study tonight if you got level 1 questions wrong • Tomorrow we will do the L.1.E.A. workshop • Cannot take exam home – ticket to leave
How to Run a Student-Lead Workshop Workshop • Describe the benefits of a student-lead teaching workshop • Discuss possible issues that might come up • How can we avoid these issues? • List teaching strategies • Examine what tools you have available to help prepare students for level 1 test focus • share out (if time)
L. 1. Ambassador Workshop • Level 1 Expert Ambassador Workshop • Look at exam • Level 1 expert ambassadors will guide NYP students to success (teach them) • NYP students need to ask necessary questions (let the E.A. know which Level 1 questions you need help with). • Do example problems together using page C4 in binder (levels of questioning sentence starters). • Cannot take exam home – ticket to leave
