  3. Please turn in your Bibles to John 1:14.

  4. Back in January of this year, we presented an introduction to a new study that we will conduct the first Sunday of each month, namely a study of the unique person of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

  5. In February, we continued this study by noting the preexistence of our Lord and then last month we studied the deity of our Lord.

  6. This morning we will note the incarnation of our Lord and Savior.

  7. In the context of Christian theology, the “incarnation” is the act whereby the eternal Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, without ceasing to be what He is, namely God the Son, clothed Himself permanently with what He did not possess before the act, namely an impeccable human nature.

  8. This made Him, the unique theanthropic person of the cosmos.

  9. The “hypostatic union,” which we will note in the future, is the result of the incarnation and was accomplished by means of the incarnation, which itself was accomplished by means of the virgin pregnancy.

  10. The virgin birth was the means by which the incarnation became a reality.

  11. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only uniquely born One from the Father, full of grace and truth. (NASU)

  12. 1 Timothy 3:16 And by common confession great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, was vindicated in the Spirit, beheld by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. (NASU)

  13. The second person of the Trinity, the Lord Jesus Christ, entered permanently into the human race by means of the virgin birth.

  14. He is the only member of the Trinity to take upon Himself a human nature.

  15. Therefore, He is different from the other members of the Godhead.

  16. He is different from the Father and the Spirit in that He clothed His deity with a sinless human nature.

  17. He is different from the other members of the human race in that He is God, and without a sin nature because He did not have a human father.

  18. He did not cease to be God because He became a man, nor was He less of a man because He was God.

  19. He was every bit of a human as the rest of the human race.

  20. However, He did not possess a sin nature since the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary and not a man.

  21. Therefore, there is no one like Him in the universe; He is a totally unique person, because He combined forever in Himself undiminished deity along with perfect sinless humanity.

  22. When speaking of the incarnation, we must of course discuss the virgin birth since, as we noted, the incarnation was the result of the virgin birth (Isa. 9:6-7; Micah 5:2; Luke 1:30-35).

  23. The virgin birth was predicted in the Old Testament.

  24. In 700 B.C., the prophet Isaiah was used by God the Holy Spirit to prophecy of the birth of our Lord.

  25. Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. (NASU)

  26. “Immanuel” is the Hebrew proper name ̔immanuel’el, which means “with us is God.”

  27. The prophet Isaiah also speaks of the incarnation in Isaiah 9:6-7.

  28. Isaiah 9:6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

  29. 7 There will be no end to the increase of {His} government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this. (NASU)

  30. The fulfillment of the prophecies of Isaiah 7:14 and 9:6-7 are recorded in Matthew 1-2 and Luke 1-2.

  31. There are many reasons for the incarnation.

  32. First of all, it was important since it resulted in Satan being judged.

  33. Our Lord’s obedience to the Father’s will defeated Satan in the angelic conflict.

  34. John 12:31 “Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world shall be cast out.” (NASU)

  35. John 16:7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

  36. 8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;

  37. 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.” (NASU)

  38. Without the incarnation there would be no cross and without the cross, there would be no victory over Satan.

  39. Colossians 2:15 When He (the Father) had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He (the Father) made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through him (Christ). (NASU)

  40. Not only did the incarnation bring about the defeat of Satan but of course it also provided all of mankind with a Redeemer (Galatians 4:4-6).

  41. If not for the incarnation, there would be no cross and resurrection and therefore there would be no salvation or hope for mankind (Titus 2:11).

  42. If there was no incarnation, there would be no cross and if no cross, no resurrection, thus leaving the entire human race lost in sin (1 Corinthians 15:17).

  43. The incarnation provided hope for mankind (1 Timothy 1:1).

  44. Man would not be reconciled to God without the incarnation (Romans 5:10-11; 2 Corinthians 5:18-19).

  45. Colossians 1:19 For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to reconcile all things to himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

  46. 21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach. (NASU)

  47. Thus, since Christ reconciled sinful humanity to a holy God, He is also the only “intermediary” between God and man.

  48. Thus without the incarnation, there would be no intermediary between sinful humanity and a holy God.

  49. 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony borne at the proper time. (NASU)

  50. The incarnation provided the human race with a “kinsman redeemer” who is someone who pays a price to set someone free who is under bondage to another (1 Corinthians 6:20).
