  1. Do Now: Autotroph vs. Heterotroph 08/31/11 08/31/11 OQC Solar Panels Answer: They are both autotrophs because they are both making their own energy. The chlorophyll and the solar panels are similar because they are both absorbing sunlight. The plant absorbs carbon dioxide from the air. The plant produces oxygen for other organisms to use. Please write a 4-5 sentence paragraph that compares this HOUSE to the PLANTS outside it. Why are both autotrophs and NOT heterotrophs? How is the chlorophyll in the chloroplasts similar to the solar panels on the roof? What bad thing does the plant absorb from the air? What good thing for the air does the plant produce? Hint: Carbon dioxide + water Sugar + Oxygen 12L 12R

  3. Do Now: Autotroph vs. Heterotroph 08/31/11 08/31/11 OQC Plant Cell vs. Animal Cell  If you did NOT complete your homework, you will work on it now.  If you did complete it, you will get to read this SUPER cool story!!!! • Please tape this into your notebook!!! • Please color the chloroplasts and the cell wall GREEN!!! • Please color the “mighty” mitochondria RED!!! “Green People of Solaron” 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 12L 12R

  4. “Green People of Solaron” Life can exist inside the bubble because there is oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and other gases like on Earth. Also, there is a bright sun. Why is it possible for life to exist inside the bubble on the planet Solaron? (Paragraph 1 and 2) Why are the Starr twins green? (Paragraph 4) What are the scientists trying to find out? (Paragraph 5) If human cells could do photosynthesis, what would be the 2 big advantages? (Paragraph 5) In the green people, which pigment are their skin cells now making? How does this help them? (Paragraph 6) Why do the Starr twins live in a house with a clear roof? (Paragraph 8) Why are the Starr twins never hungry? (Paragraph 9) Are the Starr twins AUTOTRAPHS or HETEROTROPHS? How do you know? 2. They are green because they are participating in an important experiment. 3. The scientists are trying to find out if human skin cells can use the sunlight to make their own food from carbon dioxide and water, just like plants. 4. One advantage would be that not as much food would need to be grown. This would save space and resources. Also, green people would make oxygen for other living things to breathe. 5. Their skin cells are now making the green pigment chlorophyll. The chlorophyll absorbs sunlight to use for photosynthesis. 6. They live in a house with a clear roof so that they can absorb the sunlight and do photosynthesis all the time. 7. They are never hungry because their skin cells are always making glucose (sugar). 8. The twins are Autotrophs because their skin cells do photosynthesis and make their own food. They do not have to eat to get their energy. 12L

  5. Notes: The 2 Stages of Photosynthesis 8/29/11 The plant gets WATER from the soil. Water gets to the leaves from the roots. It also absorbs CARBON DIOXIDE from the air through holes in the leaves. The chloroplast uses the water and carbon dioxide to make sugar and oxygen. It does chemical reactions to make this change. The energy to do these chemical reactions came from the light energy captured in stage 1. The sugar gets used as food for the plant cells to live. The extra sugar is stored for later in the “body parts” of the plantfruit, roots, stems, etc. The leaf releases all the oxygen into Earth’s atmosphere. • Stage 2: Using Energy to Make Sugar (Food) • Use page 121 to help you answer the questions and draw a picture Light Energy used to do the change!!!!
