  2. Name types of government • Think for a minute and write down all of the types of governments you can think of… ie: king / president 1. 2. 3. 4.

  3. Types of Greek Governments • Democracy = government by the people or rule of the many • Oligarchy = rule by a few • Monarchy = rule by one King or Queen • Tyrants = rulers who seize power by force

  4. Historical Background • During the 5th Century BC, Greece was dominated by two main powers, the city–states of Sparta and Athens • Both were Greeks, spoke and wrote Greek, and had the same gods and goddesses • They had two different ways of governing themselves • Sparta was a great land power • Athens was a great sea power

  5. City-States • Polis - A town/city/village along with its surrounding countryside • Acropolis - Fortified area on a hill • Agora - Open area where people could assemble and for a market area

  6. City-States (misc.) • Aristocracy – the wealthy ruling class • Golden Age – A wealthy, peaceful time in Greece • Oracle – A place where Greeks heard predictions about the future

  7. Activity 1 • Work with your group Step 1 • Use the handout to learn about the two city-states of Sparta and Athens • Look for similarities and differences Step 2 • Answer the questions on the handout

  8. Activity 2In your team groups analyze the content, share your thoughts and determine why you would want to live in your city-state Debate/Discuss with the class giving reasons why your city-state “rules”.

  9. Homework • Write a two paragraph essay • Paragraph One – Discuss some of the similarities and differences between Sparta and Athens governments • Paragraph Two – Explain why you would want to live in Athens or Sparta by using facts from the assigned reading (Does not have to be the same as your final group)
