  1. MATERIAL PROPERTIES 1 ACS-206 CE-ME-MECE-MSE WEEK 7 UNIT 18

  2. Tensile Strength and Deformation tension • When a material is loaded in such a way that it extends it is said to be in tension.

  3. Tensile Strength and Deformation compression • If the material compresses and shortens it is said to be in compression.

  4. Tensile Strength and Deformation • When materials are exposed to forces, such as tension and compression, they deform - that is, they change shape. The type of deformation depends on the type of force that is applied. • deformed tin can

  5. Tensile Strength and Deformation • When a material is subjected to tension, its length will increase by a certain amount. This is called extension or elongation. sample chart

  6. Tensile Strength and Deformation • It is especially important to understand the performance of materials in tension, as their tensile strength (ability to resist tension) is usually lower than their compressive strength (ability to resist compression).

  7. Elasticity and Plasticity • Some materials can extent significantly, but still return to their original shape. A material’s ability to do this is called elasticity.

  8. Elasticity and Plasticity

  9. Elasticity and Plasticity • Rubber is an example of a very elastic material – it can be elastically deformed to a considerable extent.

  10. Malleable (adj):Able to be hammered into thin sheets; capable of being extended or shaped by beating with a hammer, or by the pressure of rollers. • Synonyms:Moldable (adj), ductile (adj), flexible (adj)

  11. Proportionally (adv): In proportion; in due degree; adapted relatively. Word Formation: *Proportional (adj): The combining weight or equivalent of an element. *Proportion (n) - proportionality (n) Collocation: Limit of proportionality (phr.) Synonyms:Relatively (adv) e.g.: All parts of the building are proportionally large.

  12. UTS (Ultimate Tensile Strength):the maximumstress that a material can withstand while being stretched or pulled before failing or breaking. Tensile strength is the opposite ofcompressivestrengthand the values can be quite different. • e.g.: The UTS is usually found by performing atensile test.
