  1. Why do we have global conflicts? • Following WWII, many nations began to pull out of their global territorial holdings, in a process known as decolonization. • Because nations such as Belgium, Britain and France had controled these areas of the world for so long, their absence left a power vaccuum, where people who had long been enemies were forced to attempt to cooperate, leading to civil wars and genocide.

  2. Dates of Independence for Colonizaed African Nations

  3. Nuclear Proliferation (NP) • Countries began to research nuclear weapons during WWII, and the US bombings of Japan led to a nuclear arms race between the world’s most powerful countries • NP – The spread of nuclear weapons/technology to countries which are not nations designated as nuclear weapons states by the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) from 1970.

  4. Terrorism • Terrorism- premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets as a means of coercion. (ammended from The US Law Code) • There is no date which signals the beginning of “terrorism”, however since WWII, as nations become more powerful, subgroups of peoples are resorting to more drastic methods to achieve their ends.
