  1. Designing your composition’s Artwork Principles of Design

  2. Principles of Design How do you consume music?

  3. What do you see?

  4. Brainstorming • What images of cover art come to your mind? • Let’s look those up… • Google Image Search What do you like about those images? How do the images inform or relate to the music?

  5. Your Task • Task: You will create a work of art that will symbolize your composition. • You will hand in the following: • Rough sketch of your idea that itemizes the materials you will need to gather to create your artwork; • The final copy of your artwork on 8 ½ x 11” paper; and • A rationalization of your design choices based on the principles of design discussed in the class.

  6. Design Principles • Basic Design Principles • A design must have: • Balance • Proportion • Rhythm

  7. Design principles • Balance • Bisymmetrical: • Draw a line through the centre, and both sides are the same. • Asymmetrical: • Draw a line through the centre, and both sides are different, but both sides are given the same weight or importance.

  8. Balance: Bisymmetrical

  9. Balance: Asymmetrical

  10. Design Principles • Proportion: The relationship of the size of each part of the design to the other parts: • Sizes of items should complement each other; • No strict rules, but it should be pleasing to the eye, or out of proportion for effect.

  11. Proportion

  12. Design principles • Rhythm: the force that leads our eye from one part of the design to another and evokes an emotional response • *** This is very important for music artwork design! • A still image can makes us feel calm or relaxed; • A busy image can make use feel excited or anxious.

  15. Elements of Design • These elements are what help create the Principles of Design: • Line; • Colour; • Value; • Texture; • Space.

  16. Elements of Design • Line: • Helps create an emotional response; • Exact, clear and forceful; • Sketchy, angular and aggressive; • Flowing, smooth and gentle.

  20. Design elements • Colour: • Helps create emotional response: • Vibrant, warm colors (red and orange) =strong emotions; • Cool colours (blue) = calm, peaceful feeling; • Identical designs have a very different impact when published in different colours; • Also consider the way colours work together or work against each other.

  21. Design elements • Value: • The lightness or darkness of colours; • The value of a colour can change its emotional response.

  25. Design elements • Texture: • Can help influence emotional response; • Life experience tells us how things feel; • After we know, we only need to see objects to know how they feel; • The effect of a smooth, shiny surface is quite different from a rough, dull one– quite often, the contrast is very effective.

  29. Design elements • Space: • The play between empty-space and filled-space; • Can have very diverse emotional responses.
