  1. Order of operations with integers By Miss Bart

  2. REMEMBER your integer rules… • Integer rules • Adding same signs= find the sum and take sign • Adding different signs= find the difference and take the sign of the largest number • Subtracting= change it to addition by adding the opposite- then follow addition rules • Multiply and divide=multiply/divide like normal • Same signs= positive answer • Different signs- negative answer

  3. Try these… • -4 + -9= • 110 + -99= • -45 – 20= • -11 x -8= • 3 x -7=

  4. Now remember the integer rules and PEMDAS • The order of operations • P (parenthesis) • E (exponents) • MD- (Multiply and divide in order) • AS- (Add and subtract in order) • Work the problems carefully and neatly- WRITE DOWN EACH STEP!

  5. Let’s Practice…. • 33 - 82 - (1 - -10) =

  6. Let’s Practice…. • (16 - 18)3 - (-9 - 44) =

  7. Let’s Practice…. • -7 - 20 - (18 + 5) x 2 =

  8. Let’s Practice…. • -5 - (6 + -9) - 7 =

  9. Checking on the calculator… • Do you know who to enter in negative numbers and exponents?

  10. Time to move…you need to do it alone! • When the music plays…get up find another desk to sit at. • This is your time to dance if you want…but do not run! • When the music stops…you must find a seat. Choose a desk with a problem on it. • You will then have 2 minutes to work the problem on your desk. • When the timer goes off…trade seats with the person NEXT TO YOU. • You will then have 3 minutes to check their work. You may use the calculator to check their work. If your partner has the wrong answer (and you have put it in your calculator twice) then you and our partner need to find their mistake! • Erase the desk • When you hear the music….it is time to do it again! Repeat the first 3 steps!
