  1. Year 1Information for Parents and Carers

  2. Foundation to Key Stage 1 • Work- Profiles passed on and are continued. • Expectations- These remain the same and there is a gradualprogression to change. • There is a Phonics and Numeracy bias to the mornings work and Literacy and foundation subjects are covered in the afternoons. • The Children will also go and cover some subjects with Mrs Guy.

  3. Teamwork • The children meet the following teaching staff during the course of the week; S. Howard, S. Murphy, Mrs Oakley, Mrs Guy, Mrs MacQuarrie, Mrs Ruddy and Mrs Porter. • The staff work as a team and support each other in teaching. As within the rest of the school, some sessions are led by teaching assistants. • S. Oakley is the sports coach on a Thursday. Children will need trainers and track suit bottoms and PE socks. • Children do need to bring their water bottles containing water only everyday.

  4. Outdoor Activities • Children will be introduced to a new area, which will be used for; • Child initiated play • Directed activities • Observations by staff • Problem solving • Children will need shower proof clothing as they may be out in wet weather. • This links into our school wide approach with Forest schools initiative and is a valuable learning experience for children.

  5. Working with Parents/Carers • Consultations are held in the Autumn and Spring Terms and are an opportunity to see and discuss children’s progress. • A comprehensive written report is sent out in the Summer term. • Reading record books are used to exchange information so please remember to write a comment in the book. • Reading books are changed on Mondays/Tuesdays and Thursdays/Fridays. • Newsletters keep everyone up to date with the happenings at school.

  6. Planning/Curriculum • Our planning is topic based. • These topics will be covered during the year; • Space and the 1960s • Dinosaurs and that Rubbish • Children of other lands • New life • Ourselves • Victorians

  7. Planning/Curriculum • Literacy- Children follow the Rigby Star reading scheme. When reading with your child it may be helpful to refer to the strategies in the handout. Children have opportunities for different types of writing daily at school and would benefit from similar activities at home. • Numeracy- Number work is mainly undertaken practically. The children experience a variety of mathematical activities including problem solving in our outdoor area.

  8. Planning/Curriculum • ICT- Computers and the interactive whiteboard are used daily and laptops are used weekly. Other ICT opportunities include; Digital camera, Tape recorders, CD player, programmable robots. • P.D. will be on a Monday, Swimming will be on a Tuesday every other term, you will get a letter with details of payment nearer the time and Games on a Thursday. • Show and Tell will be on a Friday afternoon. This will be related to the topic that we are studying each term.

  9. Homework Children will receive homework on a Tuesday for the following Tuesday. This should be completed with lots of encouragement. Please remember the work should be completed by the child. This will be spellings or phonics work. Reading homework will be given every night. The children will sometimes be given other work to do. All work will be stuck into their green homework books so please check these regularly.

  10. Assessments/ Target Setting • Parents/Carers are informed of the levels that children have reached. • Parents/Carers are notified of targets set to improve levels. • The children are encouraged by all adults involved in their education.

  11. Additional Information • Please keep big bags to a minimum as we are limited on space to store these. • Please ensure all your children’s clothes are clearly labelled with their name.

  12. Help! • If you have any unwanted swimming costumes, plimsolls, clean underwear or waterproofs then they would be greatly appreciated.
