  2. Chinese Civil War • 1946. • Chinese Civil War resumed between Communist and Nationalist forces. • The communist side won and lead to China being closer to USSR’s side. • The war represented an ideological split Left vs. Right. • The Communist side won. Putting more stress on the Cold war.

  3. I chose this because it added stress on the Americans and it made Russia a more powerful country and showed that Communism was catching.

  4. NATO • The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is founded by Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. • April 4, 1949.

  5. NATO created sides. It showed the sides to the public. The Americans VS the Russians.

  6. 2nd Nuclear Power • August 29 1949. • Soviet Union tests its first atomic bomb. The Soviet Union becomes the world's second nuclear power. • This creates the tension between the US and the USSR. The Arms race had began.

They fail to stop the North Korean advance, and the UN retreats south. • November 15 1950 • After seizing North Koreas capital the UN pushed forward. • United Nations forces approach the Yalu River. In response, China intervenes in Korea with a 500,000 strong army. This offensive forces the United Nations back towards South Korea. • July 27 1953 • An armistice agreement ends fighting in the Korean War

  11. Showed that the UN was prepared to act. • Was essentially a battle between soviets and Americans. They supplied the warring country with arms and technology but didn’t face each other physically.

  12. Korean War armistice • July 27 1953 • An armistice agreement ends fighting in the Korean War • United States suffered 36,516 deaths along with during the Korean War and 8,176 missing in action. • South Korea reported some 373,599 civilian and 137,899 military deaths. • Western sources estimate the PVA suffered about 400,000 casualties while the KPA suffered 215,000 killed.

  13. End to a conflict. • America was somewhat successful. • The Chinese took sides with North Korea.

  14. Vietnam War • Starting in November, 1, 1955, the US starting sending military advisors to assist the South Vietnamese Army. • Eventually leading to the US sending troops to the depleting South Vietnamese army. • The Soviets supported the North Vietnamese while the US supported the South Vietnamese. 15. Another conflict between USSR and US. Not physically but behind the scenes. Supplying arms, etc..

  16. The Warsaw pact • May 14 1955 • The Warsaw Pact is founded in Eastern Europe and includes East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Albania, Bulgaria, and the Soviet Union. It acts as the Communist military counterpart to NATO.

  18. Russia challenges the U.S • November 15 1957 • Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev claims that the Soviet Union has missile superiority over the United States and challenges America to a missile "shooting match" to prove his assertion.

  19. A conflict seemed to be closing in. • The Russians were confident in their odds.

  20. Russia leads in space technology • November 3: Sputnik 2 was launched, with the first living being on board, Laika. • This started a space race between USA and USSR. More Competition between the adversaries.

Bush declare that a long-lasting era of peace has begun. Many observers regard this summit as the official beginning of the end of the Cold War.

  31. USSR couldn’t continue in the arms race. • A end was near, and countries were starving because of their competition. • Communism wasn’t working in the USSR.

  32. Communism Fails in USSR • 1991 December 25. • Mikhail Gorbachev resigns as President of the USSR. The hammer and sickle is lowered for the last time over the Kremlin.

  33. Showed that Capitalism was superior. • The thought of an Ideal Communist country will never work because everyone has gotten a taste of ownership, greed, and money. • Until we can get this feeling, belief and instinct out of the human mind true communism will not work.
