  9. The Scottsboro Trials took place in Scottsboro, Alabama

  13. The Scottsboro Trials began on March 25, 1931 • The Book is set during the same time, during the Great Depression

  14. Nine Black Teenage boys were riding the rails • They got into a fight with a group of white boys.

  15. The black boys throw the white boys off the train. • News gets back to town about the fight

  16. At the next stop – Scottsboro – a posse forms waiting for the train. • As they remove the boys – who are all in different cars – they come across two girls.

  17. The girls, presumably to avoid charges of Vagrancy (homelessness), accuse the black boys of rape.

  18. These are the scottsboro Boys • The Oldest is 19 • The Youngest is 13

  19. By April 9, 1931 – Less than a month later – eight of the boys were tried, convicted and sentenced to death. The ninth, 13-Year-Old Roy Wright, ends in a hung Jury when 11 vote for death and 1 vote for life imprisonment
