To me, being the best hospital in the state requires a team of the best employees, all doing their best. • As a registered nurse, I have chosen a career that has to do with caring for people. • Integrity, mutual respect, and honesty describe my job performance. • Being responsible and accountable for my job performance means taking responsibility for my own actions and not blaming others. • Giving service to others requires providing extraordinary care, staying current with best nursing practices, and continuing my education. • This is my creed.

Being the best hospital in the state requires excellent customer service. • I am committed to providing excellent customer service. • Excellent customer service exemplifies patient centered care. • Excellent nursing skills, positive attitude and a genuine caring manner are a given • requirement. • Communication skills means listening to the needs of patients and their families. • Listening to the concerns of patients and families means exactly that – listening, • listening, and listening, then responding to their concerns. • This is excellent customer service. • The goal of excellent customer service is my highest priority.

Being the best hospital in the state requires excellent customer service.One such opportunity presented itself when a 32 week pregnant patient was having severe back pain not related to labor. • The patient and her husband were frightened and unsure of what was happening. • I communicated to the patient and her husband with the help of the nurse practitioner and physician the lab results and plan of care. • My shift was ending, a CT scan was ordered and there was no one to accompany them for the scan. • I stayed with them for 3 hours beyond my shift to give support, answer questions and wait with her husband in radiology. • They were most appreciative and surprised that I would do that. • They even wrote a letter to the DON of my hospital, recognizing and thanking me for this.

Another example of excellent customer service: • Jamie was a patient in labor who had gone through a difficult pregnancy. • After reading and researching she had become in her own words “beyond terrified • of labor.” • Her husband was equally distressed. • I was able to involve her husband in the birthing process in a way that made him comfortable. • Through monitoring and listening to Jamie’s concerns I was able to inform and comfort her through the entire labor and delivery experience. • The result was a healthy baby and comforted, appreciative parents.

  6. Being a charge nurse requires excellent people skills. • I am skilled in recognizing team strengths and weaknesses, as well as leadership techniques to encourage and motivate improvement, as well as empowerment. • I am experienced in leading high performing teams. • For example, working under the Director of Women and Children’s Services I hired • and supervised a staff of ten nurses for a new Labor and Delivery Unit. • I assisted in procurement of equipment and supplies, and supervised the set-up and • operation. • I was responsible for customer relations with area physicians who referred many patients to the new unit. • As a result, the new Labor and Delivery Unit opened both efficiently and effectively • and grew consistently each month to 250 deliveries per month.

  7. I am an AWHONN fetal monitor instructor. • I participate and teach in AWHONN fetal monitor workshops and have done so, annually, for the past 5 years. • I help teach the two day Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course. • The two day workshop includes techniques to interpret fetal monitor strips, maternal and fetal physiology, case studies, fetal blood gas interpretation, and so forth. • I oversaw the transition of Labor and Delivery staff nurses to scrub and circulate for cesarean sections. • As part of this responsibility, I compiled a C-Section manual outlining scrubbing and • circulating techniques that is still being used in that hospital today.

  8. I collaborate and work well with other team members. • I always make myself available to help and assist other team members. • I am always willing to accept help from others. • I can accept constructive criticism from both my supervisors and those I work with. • I work hard to develop relationship of trust and mutual respect with peers and patients alike.

  9. I am skilled in responding to critical situations. • For example, while on duty, a patient required an emergency C-Section. • I was able to respond appropriately by interpreting the fetal monitor and patient • condition. • Contacting the physician and anesthesiology, the patient was in OR within a matter • of minutes. • The C-Section was performed, and the mother and baby did well. • I can bring these skills and experience to your Labor and Delivery.
