  3. Outcomes By the end of this lecture, the students will be able to 1-Recognize formula of alkanes 2-Knownnomenclature of alkanes 3- learn to preparation of alkanes 4- known reaction of alkanes

  4. Alkanes 1-Alkanes are fully saturated hydrocarbons • 2-General formula C2H2n+2 • 3-Single bonds (-C-H-, and -C-C-) • 4-Straight or branched chain.

  5. Formula of alkanes: 1-A line represents a carbon-carbon bond and an angle represents a carbon atom 2- A line ending in space represents a -CH3 group 3- Hydrogen atoms are not shown in line-angle formulas

  6. Nomenclature: 1-Select the longest continous carbon chain as parent name (Prefix+ane) 2-If you have two chain the same in length select the chain that have more substitution 3-If you have substituents number the chain from side near to substituents to give lowest number 4-If you have repeated groups use di….., tri……, tetra…….. 5-The groups arranged alphabetically. An alkyl group = an alkane with one H removed Alkyl groups are named by changing the ending of the alkane name to -yl Example: CH3-CH2- = ethyl

  11. Classification of Carbons in Alkanes Carbons can be classified by how many other C’s are attached to them: - No C’s = methyl CH4 - 1 C = primary (1) CH3-CH3 - 2 C’s = secondary (2) CH3-CH2-CH3 - 3 C’s = tertiary (3) CH3-CH(CH3)2 - 4 C’s = quaternary (4) C(CH3)4
