  3. AUSTRIA • Sent ultimatum to Serbia, June 30, 1914 • Declares war on Serbia, July 28, 1914

  4. 1. Stop publishing stories of hatred of the Austria. 2. Stop groups like the Black hand from forming. 3. Stop teaching in schools hatred of Austria. 4. Remove all military officers guilty of propaganda against Austria-Hungary. 5. Allow the Austro-Hungarian government to suppress any movement directed against Austria. 6. Begin investigation of the plot of June 28th in Serbia. 7. Arrest Major VojavTankosić and Milan Ciganović. 8. Stop trafficking arms and explosives to groups 9. Turn in any names who are leaders and spreading hatred of Austria. 10. Notify Austria-Hungary when these have taken place.

  6. RUSSIA • Backed Serbia • Was “protector of all Slavs” • Put troops on border of Austria

  8. FRANCE • Before having a chance to back Russia, Germany declared war on them, Aug 1, 1914 • Wanted surprise attack • Schlieffen Plan

  10. GREAT BRITAIN • Germany marched through Belgium, protected by UK • Belgium Neutrality broken • Declared war on Germany and Austria, Aug 4, 1914.

  11. ITALY • Backed out of Triple Alliance. • Said Austria was aggressor. • UK, France promised “spoils of war”

  12. BULGARIA • Hated Serbia. • Fought them for control over Balkans.

  13. OTTOMAN EMPIRE • Hated Russia • Wanted the Balkans

  14. JAPAN • Wanted to take German possessions in China. • Allies promised they can have it

  15. UNITED STATES • Neutral at first (3 years) • Gave supplies to both sides. • UK kept urging US to help.

  16. Germany sent letter to Mexico • Promised New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas if they helped. **Zimmerman Note** • UK found letter and gave it to U.S. • Declared war April 17, 1917
