  2. GPS: 30 Years and Growing • GPS Has been On-Orbit for 30 Years • 22 Feb 1978: First Launch of GPS Block1 • Weight: 450 Kg • Launch Vehicle: Atlas F • First of 11 developmental (Block 1) satellites GPS is moving into its 4th Decade of Service

  3. GPS: 30 Years and Growing • 14 Feb 1989: First launch of Operational Satellite (GPS II-1) • Operational for 12 years • GPS constellation Initial Operational Capability Declared : Dec. 1993 • FOC declared: July 1995 Beginning our 15th year of Operations

GPS: 30 Years and Growing • What happened in 2007? • New Ground Control System, Architectural Evolution Plan, operational on Sept 14, 2007 • Launch of IIRM-17 Oct 17, 2007 • Launch of IIRM-18 Dec 20, 2007 • Award of next generation ground control system (OCX) contracts, Nov 2007 • In September 2007, the U.S. Government announced its decision to eliminate the Selective Availability feature from future GPS satellites Better, More Capable, More Services to the Worldwide Users of GPS

Modernizing the Operational Control Segment (OCS): Architecture Evolution Plan (AEP) • Transitioned to the new AEP OCS (10-14 Sep 07) • IIR-17(M) launched 17 Oct 07 was controlled by new system • Replaced previous Command and Control System (CCS) C2 Signals (S-Band) Navigation Signal (L-Band) 6 AF MSs 8 AFSCN GAs 8 NGA MSs 4 GPS GAs AMCS NMCS Critical transition to new monitor & control network

GPS Constellation Status & Availabilityas of 14 Feb 08 30 3Healthy Satellites 30 Healthy Satellites • 12 Block IIR satellites • 13 Block IIA satellites • 5 Block IIR-M satellites • 3 additional IIR-M satellites to launch • Since Dec 93, U.S. DoD met/exceeded GPS service performance commitments • U.S. DoD committed to improving GPS service

  7. GPS Launch Update • Most Recent Launch • IIR-18(M) – 5th modernized SV • Launched Wednesday, 20 Dec 07 • SVN 57, PRN 29, slot C1 • Set healthy on 2 Jan 08 • Next Launches • IIR-19(M) – Mar 08 • IIR-20(M) – Jun 08 • L5 demo payload • IIR-21(M) – Sep 08 • IIF-1 launch in 2009

GPS: 30 Years and Growing • Next 30 Years will continue to bring change and an increase in capabilities • Next 10 Years will bring 2 new families of GPS satellites and new control system • GPS IIF and GPS III • OCX • Next year will bring a new civil signal, L-5 • This Year will bring the last launch of a GPS-IIRM satellite GPS will continue to improve its Capabilities

Summary • Success in GPS sustainment & modernization • New capabilities delivering enhanced performance • Developments on track to enhance space and control segments • GPS is an excellent global navigation utility • Excellent cooperation with augmentation service providers • U.S. looks forward to working with all to ensure GNSS civil systems are interoperable for the benefit of all users worldwide • U.S. is continuing to modernize and improve GPS • To remain the pre-eminent space-based PNT service • GPS will continue to lead the future GNSS system-of-systems
