  1. Welcome Fulton County Supporters of the Gifted

  2. Dream Class…

  3. How Often has this happened to you at home or in the classroom?

  4. Don’t sell yourselves short….

  5. The Future Generation of Self-Directed Learners

  6. TAG Conference 2011Inspiration Occurs…. This slide contains a video animation. Play the slideshow to see the animation.

  7. Me:: Are you serious? Boss: Yes! You can totally change everything in your room

  8. I know exactly what I am going to do, I am going to create the perfect flipped, inspired, gamified, differentiated, and project based classroom ever! This slide contains a video animation. Play the slideshow to see the animation.

  9. And it all started with the flip….

  10. Scenario • We all know kids experience it. They get home from school, start working on their homework and struggle. They check their notes from your lecture. No luck. They check their text book. (if they have one to reference) No luck either. They skip a problem and move onto the next one, hoping for a better result. • How productive is this model?

  11. Flipping my classroom • I Consider these two questions about every lesson plan I create: • How would you want to use your class time with your students? • What would be the best use of face time with you and… for students to have with each other?

  12. Rationale • Teachers in a flipped setting send their knowledge home to students (and their families) as 5-15 minute videos. • This frees up class time for students to work on homework, projects, and other assignments with the help of their teachers and peers. Kids learn at different paces and the videos allow them to press rewind over and over again. Kids who are out sick never have to miss critical content again.

  13. Check List: 3. September 2012 Complete Unit 1 in 20 Days compared to 33 Days in 2011 2. August 2012 Flipped Classroom Dream Pilot Class begins 1. June-August 2012 Begin Building Flipped/Class Lessons for the Coming School Year

  14. Check List: 6. The same first unit common assessment was given to both identical level TAG classes with the class of 2012 scoring 1% higher on average for the first and 2% higher on the second and third!! 5. To Date, in Fall 2012, Instruction days saved =23 total including additional Unusual enrichment opportunities 4. October 2012 Unit 2 Completed in 18 Days compared to 21 Days in 2011 and Unit 3 was completed in 12 days in 2012 versus 19 in 2011.

  15. Anecdotal Results This slide contains a video animation. Play the slideshow to see the animation.

  16. The videos free up class time for more one-on-one interactions with students. • Students get answers to their questions immediately so that they aren’t solidifying incorrect information. • Fewer problems are being skipped. • Homework gets done. • Grades improve. • More time can be spent with students developing higher order thinking skills and engaging in richer learning experiences. • Teachers are able to spend more time guiding, facilitating, and challenging students to stretch themselves!!! Not teacher centered!

  17. Logistical Concerns: Kids didn’t watch the video and now show up to class Earphones are required for class so… ten minutes on the back computer before they can join in with the class They also would be penalized for lost points on the HW/Quiz that adjoined the video by a late grade. (unexcused absence) Laptopss No home access to computers iTouch for checkout, computer time provided before or after school lunchtime Smart Phones No home access to internet Thumb drives or burn DVDS, play station games, iTouch ( with free smart player tech app to watch videos and do quizzes), smart phones Computers Tablets Uh, oh… No Technology Access Technology Access

  18. An InspiredClassroom Layout An Inspired layout starts it all…… The new freedom of taking computers off of the walls enables better group and differentiated Work. 2. The flipping provides the face time to change the teacher leader model so our face time together is utilized with student led learning endeavors and ownership. 3. On-line Portfolios create spaces for students to demonstrate their knowledge for an audience and reflect on their work and the work of others. 4. Gamification, well, it just provided the motivation and fun!
