What is PERSGA • It is an intergovernmental organization governed by a Council which includes environmental ministers from each of the SEVEN PERSGA member states, • PERSGAis funded by the member states, who all contribute to its budget in addition to some funds from other regional and international donors, • PERSGAcarries out its activities in close cooperation with other international organizations such as ALECSO, ROPME, UNDP, UNEP, The World Bank, IsDB, IUCN and IMO,

ObjectivesOver all Objective: to conserve the coastal and marine environment in the RSGA“PERSGA has been implementing the SAP” • Reduction of marine pollution and navigation risks, • Management & sustainable use of living marine recourses, • Conservation of habitats and biodiversity, • Establishment of a network of marine protected areas, • Support for integrated coastal zone management, • Promotion of public awareness, participation and capacity building within the region,

  5. Reduction of marine pollution and navigation risks • Hydrographic surveys, • Traffic separation scheme, • Response centres, navigation aids,

  6. Management & sustainable use of living marine recourses • Four data centres, • Two regional training centres, • Management strategy for transboundary fish stocks & invertebrates,

  7. Conservation of habitats and biodiversity • Standard survey methodology, • RAPs for key habitats & key species, • Regional reference collection centre,

  8. Establishment of a network of marine protected areas • Regional network of MPAs, • Regional master plan for MPAs, • Site specific master plans for 4 MPAs

  9. Support for integrated coastal zone management • ICZM plans approved, • Regional GIS unit, • coastal profiles completed in two countries,

  10. Public awareness, participation and capacity building • Five public environmental information centres, • 150 nature clubs, • 17 community participation projects, • learning supplements,

Conservation of Coral Reefs in the RS & GA Region • Development of SSM, • Training regional Specialists, • Conducting regional surveys, • Development of a status reports, • Development of RAP, • Holding regional workshops, • Approval of the RAP, • Development of SSMPs for the regional MPAs, • Approval of SSMPs, • Implementation of demonstration project, • Development of a Protocol concerning the Conservation of Biological Diversity and Protected Areas,

Ongoing plans of the conservation of the Environment of the RSGA • Implementation of monitoring programme for Key Habitats and Key Species, • Development of funding proposals for the RAPs and SSMPs, • Implementation of regional environmental monitoring programme, • Development of project proposals for “Oil Spill Contingency Planning” • Development of project proposals for the “Protection of Marine Environment from Land Based Activity”
