Gary went to the public library to escape his problems. • A librarian helped him discover a new life through books. • Gary was hooked on books and reading. • His life was transformed through books.
Gary was inspired to write some of his stories after running the 1,180-mile Alaskan Iditarod twice. • Of Gary’s 175 books, three were awarded the Newbery Honor Award: HATCHET, DOGSONG, and THE WINTER ROOM.
