  3. STUDENT ID CARDS You must wear the card at all times in a lanyard. This is for safety and security reasons. If you have forgotten your lanyard you must get a replacement from your teacher, the LRC or reception and return it to reception at the end of the day. If you lose your ID card there is a small replacement charge.

  4. Arrive on time – lateness will receive a concern on Pro Portal • No phones out in class– at the start of the lesson, all phones must be placed on silent and put in the box on the table. • No food and drinks in class. • Come prepared to work – that includes having a pen. • Complete homework that is set • Respect others in the class • Anyone not following these rules will receive a concern on Pro Portal.

  8. Course book You do not have to purchase this book, however if you can get hold of a copy it will help you with your studies. You can also use other GCSE Sociology course books if you have them

  9. How will I be assessed? • 2 exam papers to be taken in May 2018 • I will do my best to give you the information you need. However you must not just rely on me. • Take responsibility for your learning – look at www.wjec.co.uk as well as my twitter page & blog. Look at the specifications and the past exams/mark schemes

  11. Questions Sociologist ask A LOT of questions and it is important that you do this too. They ask a lot of questions because they want to understand society. To understand society they look for facts NOT opinions.

  12. Research Methods • Who knows what research methods is all about? • Write this down in your book • Research methods are, the methods that are used by sociologists to look at society

  13. How does Sociology compare to other sciences? • Biologists focus on the body. • Psychologists focus on the mind. Look at an individual. • Sociologists focus on the environment and the social aspects of human behaviour. Look at a community.

  14. Sociology is the systematic study of society, how people think and behave Write this definition down S&C: What problem might there be if we do not have sociologists telling us about how people think and behave?

  16. Culture is… • The way of life that is shared by a group of people • It consists of rules for expected behaviour

  18. This is called Cultural Diversity Cultural Diversity – The range of different ideas and cultures that exist

  20. Cultural Universals and Cultural Relatives Think, Pair, Share What might these mean?

  21. More general Cultural Universals – Something that is common in all cultures across the world (e.g. marriage/religion/family/celebrations/festivals)Cultural Relativity – Things that are culture specific (e.g. Japanese people eating raw fish) More specific

  24. Exam Practice This is to be completed in silence. Read through the text you have been given and then answer the questions in your book. Look at how much each question is worth. Use this to decide how much to write.

  26. Homework –Number 1 • Create a presentation about another society thinking about what makes up its culture. Consider, food, music, language, clothing, history and art • Suggestions: • USA • Bangladesh • Australia • India • Mexico • Can be in PPT form or a collage/drawing form with labels. This will be marked and entered onto pro portal Due Thursday 21st September
