  1. Heart Diseases Date: Aug.8, 2004 Class: Sunday Morning Topic: Overcoming Pride & Arrogance Speaker: Todd Rogers

  2. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • The good, the bad & the ugly! • The good is when pride is used to define man’s self respect and personal dignity. • Matthew 22:39 (NKJV)39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ • 1 Timothy 4:12 (NKJV)12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

  3. The bad & ugly. • The bad and ugly is when we have an inordinate self esteem which is better described as conceit. • Proverbs 21:4 (NKJV)4 A haughty look, a proud heart, And the plowing of the wicked are sin.

  4. Is it a sin? • It is a great sin. “Pride thrust Nebuchadnezzar out of man’s society, Saul out of his kingdom, Adam out of paradise, Haman out of court, and Lucifer out of heaven” (Thomas Adam). • Proverbs 6:16-19 (NKJV)16 These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.

  5. Some examples in the Bible. • Uzziah-2 Chronicles 26:16 (NKJV) 16 But when he was strong his heart was lifted up, to his destruction, for he transgressed against the Lord his God by entering the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense. • Haman-Esther 3:1-2 (NKJV) 1 After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him and set his seat above all the princes who were with him. 2 And all the king’s servants who were within the king’s gate bowed and paid homage to Haman, for so the king had commanded concerning him. But Mordecai would not bow or pay homage.

  6. Luke 18:10 (NKJV)10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. • Acts 12:22 (NKJV)22 And the people kept shouting, “The voice of a god and not of a man!” • Matthew 20:21 (NKJV)21 And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.”

  7. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • Pride leads to a fall! • Prevents conversion. • Matthew 18:4 (NKJV)4 Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. • Matthew 5:3 (NKJV)3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. • Acts 24:25 (NKJV)25 Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, “Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you.”

  8. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • Pride leads to a fall! • Refuse to confess sins. • 1 John 1:8 (NKJV)8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. • James 5:16 (NKJV)16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

  9. Pride leads to a fall! • Live beyond means. • Romans 12:17 (NKJV)17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. • “We are plagued with buying things we do not need, with money we do not have, to impress people we do not know (Winkler)”

  10. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • Pride leads to a fall! • Causes contention. • Proverbs 13:10 (NKJV)10 By pride comes nothing but strife, But with the well-advised is wisdom.

  11. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • Pride leads to a fall! • Leads to rebellion. • Psalm 10:4 (NKJV)4 The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.

  12. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • Pride leads to a fall! • Causes rule or ruin attitude. • 3 John 9-10 (NKJV)9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us.10 Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church.

  13. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • Pride leads to a fall! • Leads to apostasy. • 1 Timothy 3:6 (NKJV)6 not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. • Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV)18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. • 1 Corinthians 10:12 (NKJV)12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

  14. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • Different forms of pride. • Spiritual pride. • Mark 12:38 (NKJV)38 Then He said to them in His teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, • Ephesians 2:8-10 (NKJV)8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

  15. Different forms of pride. • Intellectual pride. • 1 Corinthians 8:1-2 (NKJV)1 Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. Proverbs 3:5 (NKJV)5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; • Proverbs 26:12 (NKJV)12 Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him. • Psalm 111:10 (NKJV)10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever.

  16. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • Different forms of pride. • Material things pride. • 1 Chronicles 29:12 (NKJV)12 Both riches and honor come from You, And You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; In Your hand it is to make great And to give strength to all. • James 1:17 (NKJV)17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

  17. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • Different forms of pride. • Social pride. • James 2:1-4 (NKJV)1 My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality. 2 For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes, 3 and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, “You sit here in a good place,” and say to the poor man, “You stand there,” or, “Sit here at my footstool,” 4 have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?

  18. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • Different forms of pride. • Race pride. • Romans 1:14-16 (NKJV)14 I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and to unwise. 15 So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

  19. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • Different forms of pride. • Pride of looks. • 1 Timothy 2:9-10 (NKJV)9 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.

  20. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • Different forms of pride. • Pride of sin. • 2 Corinthians 7:10 (NKJV)10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

  21. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • Ask some thought provoking questions. • Have we ever been motivated by pride to accept an important capacity in the local congregation? • …declined an opportunity to serve so as to be pressed a little harder? • …by pride to refuse a job within the local church because the job was insignificant? • …did we resent constructive criticism because of selfish pride.

  22. …become jealous or envious of someone who out did us? • …ever pushed ourselves to the breaking point due to pride? • …controlled so much by pride that we could not admit error on a position? • …difficulty appreciating what others have done, and expressing that thing? • …been ashamed of the church or my brethren?

  23. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • The cure! • God’s attitude towards pride.

  24. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • The cure! • Love. • 1 Corinthians 13:4 (NKJV)4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;

  25. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • The cure! • We are but men. • Psalm 9:20 (NKJV)20 Put them in fear, O Lord, That the nations may know themselves to be but men.

  26. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • The cure! • We have no sufficiency in and of ourselves. • John 5:30 (NKJV)30 I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

  27. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • The cure! • Think of ourselves no higher than we should. • Romans 12:3 (NKJV)3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. • Galatians 6:3 (NKJV)3 For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

  28. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • The cure! • Walk humbly with God. • Micah 6:8 (NKJV)8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?

  29. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • The cure! • We are debtors. All we have is through grace of God and help of others. • 1 Corinthians 15:10 (NKJV)10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

  30. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • The cure! • Glory only in the cross. • Galatians 6:14 (NKJV)14 But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

  31. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • The cure! • Crucify self. • Galatians 2:20 (NKJV)20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

  32. Overcoming Pride & Arrogance • The tragedy of pride. • Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV)18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.
