Neuro Linguistic Programming • Concerned with the way in which we perceive the world and process our perceptions • Our senses provide information about the world directly around us • Of the world beyond? • Media - we rely on info provided to us to construct our understandings of the world and our place in it • Argument – media plays a powerful role in our society • Research into media effects – modules 11-13, files • Research – measure the occurrence of an issue/topic (quantitative method) in content analysis (essay 1) • Research – how an issue is represented (qualitative method) in semiotics (essay 2)

NLP • NLP classifies our perceiving as modes – • Visual • Auditory • Kinesthetic • NLP states that reality is not necessarily experienced in the same way by each of us • Dominant sensory mode (DSM) • None of the modes is ‘better’ or ‘more normal’ • Having a DSM doesn’t mean you don’t use the other modes – dominant not exclusive • Indicators: • Language, eye accessing cues, voice/tone/tempo, hand gestures/general body posture/ breathing

  4. Using NLP • Intrapersonal communication: • As a university student - economical ways of learning and studying • Interpersonal communication: • Accurate communication with others • Ethical issues – adopting another’s DSM for commercial gain

  5. Approaches to Analyzing the Media • Application of communication models – Lasswell’s formula as it relates to our tasks • “who says what in which channel to whom with what effect?”

From week one … our ongoing tasks • Examples of cartoons clippings • Major Essay due in May • 3 topical cartoons • Editorial pages good sources • Satire of current political, public, social, cultural or economic events • File for media effects • Explore current comment of alleged effects of the media on our behaviour, attitudes and consciousness (both positively and negatively) • collect media examples from TV, cinema, advertising, radio and the Net

  7. NLP Tutorial exercise • Eye accessing cue exercise • Group work - triads • Four questions • Warm up - Geography and Destiny • Arguments for and against the media • Political Economy of the Media • Fears about the Media

  8. Next Week • Module 3: Media and Society • Now – we will test each other with tools from NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming …..

  9. NLP assignment • Assignment due Monday 14 March, 5pm • 500 words (+/- 10%, that is 450-550 words) • Use assignment cover sheet • 4-5 pages including a title page (1), the essay proper (2-3), bibliography

  10. Title Page • title page includes: • Title of essay • Course (CMS1010) • Lecturer name (Lauretta Wright) • Date due (17 March 2006) • Student details (name, student number)

Discussion • Use a footer with page number and student name & number for identification • Paragraphs • Make a statement • Back it up with an example and/or illustration (proof) • Tie it back to introductory remarks / thesis statement • Remember to link paragraphs, lead into next idea with your concluding remarks from previous paragraph • Comment of the questionnaire results • Discuss what you have learnt about your own way of thinking, learning, and reacting to the world • Conclusion – do not introduce and new evidence

  12. Bibliography • Use Harvard System (author – date) • Alphabetical listing • List all sources used including selected readings provided • Aim for 4-6 sources for this essay

  13. Word Limit and other ‘stuff’ • 10% (and up to 15%) on introduction, 10% (and up to 15%) on conclusion, approximately 70-80% on discussion or “body” • Reread pages 14-19 on essay preparation (noting margin width, font size, line spacing)
