Born in Vic-Sur-Seille (March 13, 1593- January 30th, 1652) • Unclear education • Traveled to Italy or the Netherlands early in his career • Possibly trained under Jacques Bellange • His paintings reflect the Baroque naturalism of Carravagio, but is often compared to Hendrick Terbrugghen • His religious works, unlike Carravagio, lack dramatic effects • 1617-Married Diane Le Nerf, from a minor noble family, and established a studio in Lunéville • Painted mainly religious and some genre scenes • Attained the title “Painter to the King” • Involved in a Franciscan-led revival in Lorraine, and later switched to just religious paintings influenced by genre • De La Tour and his family die (1652) due to an epidemic in Lunéville. • Étienne (born 1621), was his pupil
