  2. Family/Love Life • Horace G. Mann married to Eva Jane Euller. • Horace Mann was born in May, 4,1796 in Massachusetts • Lived in poverty at his parents farm. • He died August 2, 1859.

  3. History • He mastered the tenets of the orthodox all by the age of ten, then rejected this faith and choose Unitarianism . • Became State Representative1827 and 1848 and then as a Senator in the Massachusetts Legislature. • In 1823 he graduated from Brown University.

  4. Secretary of Mass. State Board of Education • Improved Schools everywhere in the state. • Established schools for teachers. • Established Free District Libraries. • Edited books that became famous. • “Common School Journal”

  5. Improved Schools! How? • Horace Mann Improved schools by speaking out to the public and saying the schools needed more money. • Mann campaigned throughout the state. • Then he provided materials , inferior school committees and pupil absences.

  6. He established school for teachers??? • He established the first normal School for Teachers in 1839 • Was the first efforts of Mann • Since then there had been better teachers in life (Ms.Black).

  7. Established School District Libraries • He improved education by establishing free libraries. • He successfully improved other libraries • “If you build it, they will come”

  8. Extended His Influence Beyond Massachusetts He edited “The Common School Journal” that later became FAMOUS! (yeah get exited about school!) He wrote 12 Annual Reports that also became famous. Well some of them…

  9. His Resignation. Mann resigned in 1848 to take vacations in the United State Congress. In 1853, he went to the presidency of Antioch College in yellow springs. He became president to carry out his educational higher ideas.

  10. 1)Fifth Annual Report 2) Seventh Annual Report Mann argued successfully that if we were in a better economic state we would be smarter. This was successful through taxation Mann appraised the Prussian school system. (Compulsory and progressive) This improved education through educational theories.

  11. Mann said that was a natural right for every child. In 1846 it was a responsibility for the state to insure that education was provided to every child Presented a rationale to support student in school through taxation.
