  2. Ob / Gyn Block • The four week block covers the female reproductive system • Two weeks of gynecology • Two weeks of pregnancy related material • Also included is breast, anatomy, physiology, pathology, and breastfeeding.

  3. Overview • 4 week block • One final exam, no practical • Weekly quizzes • Four S&I sessions • Two noon-time lectures • One optional international medicine lecture (Sudan)

  5. New for 2010: • Learning topics • Continued increases in number of case presentations intermixed with clinical material, use of video • The female pelvic exam was taught by Jennifer Lykins under direct supervision of Broecker • Increased use of turning point

  6. Exam • One final exam • All board style multiple choice • All questions either new, or certified by the lecturer giving the material in lecture, readings, or learning topics • Two questions per hour of lecture • Approximately 130 questions

  9. Student feedback: Focus GroupPositive Comments Overall: • Overall: Enjoyable and well organized • Felt clinical relevance was good and helpful for upcoming boards • Felt this block was helpful for upcoming clinical rotations

Student feedback: Focus GroupConstructive Criticism Overall: • Would like an introduction to the block • Some felt the block was too clinical • Wanted lecture material prior to class • Didn’t like lunchtime sessions • Want more pathology with Dr. Jenkinson • Wanted more Gross Anatomy; more lectures and labs

  11. Faculty: Positive Comments • Many faculty complimented for teaching style, content of presentations, and ability to stimulate interest in and understanding of ob/gyn • A fellow who taught the endocrine lectures was complimented

Faculty: Constructive Criticism / Comments • Some faculty were criticized for not being dynamic • Some criticism of power-point presentations – to many slides • Some criticism of a particular faculty members bias on certain topics • Wanted more information on breast-cancer by a visiting professor • Another VP was complimented, but should have been given more time.

  13. Written Exam: Positive • Was fair • Most students believed the exam was represntative of the LTs, Lectures, and other material required.

  14. Written Exam: Negative • Several questions were thought to be ambiguous or could have had more than one answer • No histology questions on the exam (a one hour lecture) • Felt breast cancer questions did not correlate with the material presented • No table of normal lab values given

  15. S&I sessions • Overall very well liked • 4 were done • Liked the variety of formats

Changes for next year: • Provide an Intro to the Block • Add basic scientist to block team and onsider where we need more basic science (Step one) • Encourage students to buy the textbook • Slight alteration in time for lectures needing more or less time • Attempt to more closely monitor how the VPs covers topics (breast disease) • Increase the number of anatomy and histology images on the exam • Request that faculty getting lower student satisfaction scores work with Steve • Require lectures to be posted 1 week ahead of time • Normal lab values provided for the exam
