Calibration of RPC Rate as a Luminosity Monitor at 8 TeV Using 2011 Data

This study presents a method to exploit the strong linear correlation between the rate of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) and instantaneous luminosity. By fitting the relationship using calibration data from 2011, we derive the RPC luminosity equation: RPC_lumi = (rate - b)/a. Using the same coefficients from the 2011 linear fit allows us to accurately estimate the luminosity for 2012. Our findings demonstrate that the slope remains unaffected by high pile-up events, variations between 8 TeV and 7 TeV, and reduced beta star conditions, providing reliable luminosity estimates for ongoing experiments.

  1. RPC 8 TeV

  2. RPCs as “luminosity monitor” • Exploit the strong linear correlation between the RPC rate and the instantaneous luminosity:rate = a * lumi + b (1) • Fitting (1)  calibration with the 2011 HF lumi values  allows to determine the “RPC luminosity” as: RPC_lumi= (rate – b)/a (2) 5 • We can calculate the 2012 lumi with the same coefficients of the 2011 linear fit • Slope not affected by high PU, 8TeV vs. 7TeV, reduced β* , etc. • Good estimate of the 2012 luminosity
