  2. Professionalism • All the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and behaviors that are valued by members of a particular profession • Block courses and field experiences are where you begin to develop your professional reputation

  3. Professionalism • Professionalism is judged by • What you do • What you say • How you say it • Spoken word • Standard English • Tone of voice • Written word • Unspoken communication • Attentiveness • Body language

  4. Class Expectations • Attend all scheduled class sessions • Be on time • Stay for the entire class • Be prepared for class • Read the syllabus carefully and thoroughly • Read assigned texts and be prepared to discuss • Have assignments ready to submit on (or before) the due date

  5. Class Expectations • Civility counts! • Attentiveness • Listening • To others (professor and peers) when they are speaking • Expect others to listen to you • Questions – ask for clarification • Cell phones • Laptops • Netiquette

  6. Purpose of Field Experiences • Provide practical experiences for teacher candidates to apply what they are learning in courses • Provide experiences for developing professionalism

  7. Purpose of Field Experiences • Familiarize teacher candidates with the everyday work of teachers • Introduce teacher candidates to principals, teachers, and other school personnel

Field Experience Expectations • Attend all assigned days • Inform school, classroom teacher, and university supervisor if unable to attend • Make up any time lost • Consult with classroom teacher and university supervisor • Deadline • No later than the day of graduation • If graduation is on Saturday, time must be made up no later than the Friday before graduation

  9. Field Experience Expectations • Be on time every day • Dress appropriately • Show willingness to work and learn • Show initiative • Conduct yourself in a manner that shows you are desirable for employment

  10. Tips for Success • Maintain a positive attitude • Be prepared for classes • Be ready and willing to help in field placements • Develop rapport with your course instructors, classroom teachers, and university supervisors • Develop positive relationships with students

  11. Tips for Success • Develop a high degree of professionalism • Communicate with your university supervisors, classroom teachers, course instructors • Ask questions!!!

  12. Tips for Success • Communicate with your classroom teacher and university supervisor about field experience questions or concerns • Consider attendance and punctuality as critical to success • Strive for high quality in all you do

Tips for Success • Model Standard English in spoken and written language • Show enthusiasm for teaching and learning • Practice professionalism! • Be proactive - deal with problems immediately and directly • Be tactful and respectful • When presenting a problem, offer a solution • Avoid gossip!

  14. Tips for Success • Practica will be graded: • Satisfactory • Unsatisfactory • Your course grade can be affected by: • Late and/or poor quality field experience assignments • Poor quality written or spoken language • Absences, late arrivals, or early departures

  15. Tips for Success • Your field experience (and possibly other) course grade can be affected by: • Negative comments expressed in public • Disclosure of legally protected information • Other unprofessional behavior

  16. Tips for Success • When puzzled or in doubt – ask questions! • Course instructor • Classroom teacher • University supervisor • Seek to understand situations before making judgments • Remember and apply the “Golden Rule”

Other Information • Criminal Background Check • Completed each semester • Deadlines each semester to complete form – must be notarized and returned to Office of Field Experiences • Failure to meet Field Experience and/or Background Check deadlines will result in not being placed in a school for the next semester
