French fries// are the world’s greatest food// because they can make you feel wonderful//after eating them./// For example, if you’ve had a bad day, you can go to McDonald’s and buy some salty, warm, delicious french fries and all your troubles will disappear. Therefore, without french fries, the world is a darker place.

  3. Today • Talk about Task 3 (Pt.1) • Speech skills

  4. Task 3: Speech + Debate Part 1: You will give a 3 -4 minute speech (solo). With a partner: - Decide on a 2-sided issue that you both know about and both have opinions about.

  5. Task 3: Speech + Debate Part 1: The issue should have two sides.Poor example: Murder is bad. You need to choose an issue that people could have different opinions about. i.e., KMU should change the food in the New Bauer cafeteria because it’s not good.

  6. Task 3: Speech + Debate Part 1: Each partner will choose one side of the issue. Each will give a persuasive speech about his/her side of the issue. - In Part 2, we will use these issue for debate.

  7. Task 3: Speech + Debate Part 1: - Each speech will be 3 – 4 minutes long. - No PowerPoint (or other presentation programs). - No scripts (only cue cards will be allowed).

  8. Task 3: Speech + Debate Part 1 Evaluation: • Presentation Skills. • Content. • Organization. • Style * • Time use.

  9. Task 3: Speech + Debate Part 1: - This will account for 60% of the Task 3 grade (Pt. 2 will comprise the other 40%).

  10. Pausing Some speakers speak too fast (and look nervous) Others may speak too slow (and appear nervous or unprepared). • Proper pausing can help make your speech more effective. The two types of pausing are: - Full stop (i.e., at the end of a sentence). /// - Slow down (a vey brief pause between two words). //
