  4. Whale Words (FYI) 1. Baleen- stiff strips that hang like a big comb in the jaws of some whales. These strips take the place of teeth. 2. Barnacle- a tiny hard-shelled animal that attaches itself to whales, rocks, and other sea surfaces. 3. Blowhole- a nostril at the top of a whale’s head. Humpbacks have two. Some whales have only one.

  5. Whale Words 4. Blubber- A thick layer of fat under a whale’s skin. 5. Breaching- leaping out of the water 6. Extinct- no longer alive on Earth 7. Fin- A fan-shaped body part used to steer in water.

  6. Whale Words 8. Flipper- a broad, flat limb used for swimming. 9. Krill- small shrimp-like creatures that whales eat 10. Migration- when animals move to a different area to avoid cold weather, find food, or find a safe place to breed and raise their young.

  8. Subheading Predictions • We will make predictions about the text by turning the subheadings into questions. • Example: Flying Leaps Why do humpbacks fly out of the water? Prediction: Humpbacks fly out of the water to move faster. Write your predictions on your paper.

  9. Setting Purpose • As you read, search for evidence to support the idea that the humpback whale is an amazing creature. • You should put this purpose in the “W” column of your K-W-L Chart.

  10. Marking the Text • Write responses to each paragraph directly on your article. • Questions • Connections • Opinions • Conclusions • Write one response for each subheading.

  11. Marking the Text 1st Paragraph • I didn’t know that the humpback whale weighed as much as eight elephants! • How can it be so big and still breach out of the water so high? • I think the whales should continue to have protection because they are so beautiful and entertaining.

  12. Post-reading activity • Now it’s time to fill in the “L” column of the K-W-L Chart. What did you learn? • What are some of the comments you wrote while you marked the text? • Brainstorm a list of reasons that the humpback is an amazing creature.

Summary Activity • Step 3 – Event & Fact Outline • Take a detail you highlighted from each subheading. • Step 4 – Final Summary Paragraph • Re-write your topic sentence, the facts from your outline, and a concluding sentence. • Good summaries include all the important points from all parts of the article and a cohesive topic sentence.
