Explanation of theme / meaning • The theme of this poem is the balance between solitude / silence and social time. • The poem states that the silent time between social moments is a “gift” and should be appreciated like one. • The poem states both elements are essential to have a satisfactory life.

  3. Analysis Poem (Verse 1) Analysis "sharing" describes social activities describes both appreciating the shared social moments and moments of silence with others the spaces that lie between moments of sharing, those times when it is enough to feel the presence of the other, the knowing that this silence, too, is a gift;

  4. Analysis Poem (Verse 2) Analysis very literal, it states how the mentioned places appeals to a deep part of us that appreciates solitude, drawing one in the silence of the mountains or the dark forest, or the plains at night, reaching out to touch some part of us that craves time alone;

  5. Analysis Poem (Verse 3) Analysis it states that silence is present in our waking and sleeping moments, and describes what they feel like the moments before sleep, or after waking, when the world rises or falls into order, finds shape and meaning of its own.

Analysis Poem (Verse 4) Analysis it states that both solitude and social time are necessary for a good life it states that we must learn how to use both words/speaking and silence We need these silences as we need the words we must first learn to say and then forget as we come to know silence.

Poetic Devices • “This silence... is a gift.” Line 1; MetaphorSilence is not really a gift from anyone; the writer is trying to say that silence should be appreciated like a gift. • “The silence… reaching out to touch” Line 11; PersonificationSilence cannot actually reach out and touch someone. When the author says it is “reaching out to touch some part of us that craves time alone,” he / she is trying to say that some part of “us” craves time alone, and silence helps satisfy that craving. • “The world… rises or falls into order” Line 14; MetaphorThe world does not actually “rise” or “fall”; the writer is stating that the world is unclear for the few moments after waking or immediately before sleep.

Poetic Devices • “The world.. finds shape and meaning” Line 17; MetaphorThe author is referring to the world being unclear before sleep / after waking, and you will “find shape and meaning after a few moments (the world will become clear once more.) • “We need this silences as we need the words” Line 11; SimileHe / she is trying to say that the need for silences is similar to the need for the words (explained later in the verse).
