  2. Contents of Presentation • Introduction • Methodology • Findings • Conclusion

  3. Introduction • Facebook is a popular social networking site that has many boons and banes • addiction to Facebook is a major problem as it will affect our ability to socialise • More and more people are addicted to Facebook • Through this research we will know how Facebook affects the users’ social lives • We will also be able to come out with solutions pertaining to this problem

  4. Methodology • We conducted a survey on 25 people • We had an interview with Miss Jaime, the school counsellor, to find out her views on Facebook addiction and her suggestions on how to solve the problem

  5. Survey Findings (Demographics) • 92% of our survey respondents use Facebook

  6. Survey Findings (Demographics) Less than five hours per week – 13 people 5 – 15 hours - 8 people 16 – 25 hours per week - 1 person More than 25 hours per week - 1 person

  7. Survey Findings (Demographics)

  8. Survey Findings(Facebook users who use Facebook for less than 15 hours per week)

  9. Survey findings Facebook users who use Facebook for more than 15 hours per week

  10. Survey Findings

  11. Survey FindingsSome solutions on curbing Facebook addiction (as provided by surveyed) • Encourage people to create more events for meeting up with family and friends so that there can be more face-to-face interaction • Create an application that lets you set a time limit for accessing Facebook so that once time is up, you will automatically log out • Self-discipline and time management

  12. Interview findings • According to Ms Jaime, the school counsellor, age might influence how users use Facebook and the way users think of Facebook • For example, the younger generation might create a Facebook account just because they want to fit in with others • The older generation, who did not have Facebook in their time, feel curious about what it is and therefore want to create a Facebook account

  13. Interview findings • Ms Jaime, who belongs to the older generation, feels that Facebook has both positive and negative impacts on her • Positive: she was able to find her old friends on Facebook • Negative: sometimes she spends hr time on Facebook doing useless things, thus she wasted a lot of time • Also, she felt tired after that and thus did not want to do any work

  14. Conclusion • A user’s level of education does not affect the number of hours he or she spends on Facebook • Spending a lot of time on Facebook does not necessarily mean addiction to Facebook • When you think of Facebook when you are offline, this affects the physical interaction with friends or family

  15. Conclusion • You can use Facebook and have enough time for other activities at the same time, as long as you manage your time wisely • Facebook might not necessarily affect your social life negatively, it can affect it positively too, as long as you use it in the right way

  16. Acknowledgements • Mr Kelvin Yap, our teacher-mentor, for his guidance and advice throughout the entire project • The 25 people we surveyed and our interviewee, Ms Jaime, for their valuable responses and opinions which benefited us greatly in our project • The librarian, who kindly rented us Project Corners whenever we needed them • The photocopying lady, who helped us to print our documents
