  1. 2012TEACHER WORKSHOP

  2. 2012 TEACHER WORKSHOP Love for the Truth as Revealed in Scripture

  3. The Word on the Word • Matt. 4:4 • John 8:31-47 • John 14:6 • John 14:24-26 • John 16:12-14 • 1 Cor. 2:10b-16 • Eph. 2:13-22 • Heb. 1:1-2 • 2 Pet. 3:15-16

  4. John 8:31-47 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

  5. John 8:31-47 (continued) Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”

  6. John 8:31-47 (continued) “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. You are doing the works of your own father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”

  7. John 8:31-47 (continued) Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

  8. John 8:31-47 (continued) Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

  9. Love for the Truth as Revealed in Scripture • 1st Characteristic of the Heart of the Teacher • Who do we claim as father? • Topic unnecessary? • What does it mean to LOVE the truth

  10. What does it mean to “LOVE” the truth? • Heart state – core motivation – “feeling” into action • NO DISTORTION • Eccl. 5:2, Isa. 29:13, Luke 6:45, Rom. 10:5-13 • 2 Pet. 3:15-16, “ignorant and unstable people distort”? • Be sure - 2 Tim. 2:15, James 3:1

  11. What does it mean to “love” the truth? • BUILD UP • Rom. 14:19 – “peace and mutual edification” • Examine your content for these things • Happy, happy, joy, joy? • Jesus’ example - tearing down is reserved for things that tear down, that suppress or distort the word of God • Eph. 5:8-10 – “find out what pleases the Lord.”

  12. What does it mean to “love” the truth? • EXAMPLE • Example speaks louder than words • John 3:1-21 – Nicodemus • Faith without action is dead (James 2:17) Love without benefit to those loved is an illusion • James 1:22-25 – DO what it SAYS

  13. 2012 TEACHER WORKSHOP Standing on the Inerrancy and All-Sufficiency of Scripture

  14. Standing on Scripture • “Inerrant” • What does that mean? • Matt. 24:35 (also Mark 13:31, and Luke 21:33), John 16:7-14, John 17:20-21

  15. Standing as Christians • Eph. 6:10-18 Without the word we are without defense—or offense. We can’t stand for OR against. • Matt. 4:4 (…every word that comes from the mouth of God.) • John 14:24 (Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching) • 1 Cor. 2:13 (…we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words) • Eph. 2:19-20 (…built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets) • 1 Cor. 15:12-19 – It all boils down to this

  16. Standing as teachers • First, what God said is TRUE • God’s word is good enough - sufficient • Even if I don’t like it – even if I don’t understandit • Second, if I’m going to teach, I have a responsibility to TEACH WHAT GOD SAID • Mark 9:42, Luke 6:39-42, James 3:1 • 2 Peter 3:15-16 .”…ignorant and unstable people distort…to their own destruction.” • Third, UNDERSTANDING THE SCRIPTURE is what drives us • 1 Cor. 1:25 - For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
