Update on Collaborative Marine Information and Services Efforts in the Great Lakes

This update provides progress on key deliverables, solicits feedback, and discusses future collaborative actions to harmonize service offerings in the Great Lakes region. It highlights areas of adjustment and improvement and presents a client/user profile. Feedback from the NWSLiveChat and joint training events is also included, along with plans for enhancing collaboration. Suggestions, ideas, and opportunities for improvement are requested from participants.

  2. Outline • Progress on key deliverables • Solicit feedback from the NWS chat room participants • Looking for suggestions on future collaborative actions

  3. Harmonizing Service offerings • September meeting in Buffalo to discuss the similarities and differences between the offerings • Comparison document produced • Several areas of adjustment potentially to have a more consistent program • Areas of improvement were highlighted • These need to be validated by the client/user group and prioritized then approved by the appropriate areas

  4. Create a Great Lakes Client/User Profile • International Ship Captains Meeting in Owen Sound • Lake Carriers Association Meeting in Cleveland • Discussions between Port Met officers, Marine Program supervisors and marine forecasters • Collection and analysis of feedback • Draft summary outlining requirements expected in the coming months • Ongoing discussions with NWS colleagues and knowledge sharing

NWSLiveChat Feedback • OSPC joined the NWSLiveChat Great Lakes Marine group in October 2011 as a pilot • OSPC forecasters were excited to try a new cool tool (and we didn’t necessarily restrict them to only marine desk users) • Most staff do long on to the chat room when they are on shift, some prefer to pick up the phone

Feedback from OSPC • “awesome, extremely useful tool..it’s great for keeping track of their gale warnings/watches”, • “useful to pick other’s brains during the forecast process for non clear-cut cases… • chatting makes the phone calls more focused… • helps to generate better and more consistent products… • resolve timing issues through compromise… • like the alerts and warning status changes…

  7. Feedback from the OSPC • we also use this to coordinate public and severe weather • it is particularly effective to pass on significant information right away ie. WPC water level just reached 2 metres above chart datum or 4 cm hail in Welland.. • it would be handy to have some kind of graphic scratch or play by play pad available… • it gives us near-instant access to the best forecast tool available: a trained human brain other than my own!”

  8. Feedback from the NWS side…. • Question for NWS…have the postings and exchanges been beneficial to your offices as well? If not what can we do to improve the interaction from your perspective?

  9. Joint Training events • OSPC has offered Storm damage training, change of season and other workshops to any meteorologist in the Great Lakes region who is interested through our Webex system • Through the Bilateral efforts, OSPC has participated on the Joint Marine Training sessions offered (ie. Freezing spray sessions) as well as attended the first collaborative workshop • NWS Buffalo has been extremely helpful for MSC in our quest to have a Weather event simulator

  10. Enhancing Collaboration • Great Lakes Operational Meteorology workshop has a long history of actively drawing all meteorologists together • We have a great community to move things ahead and be leaders in this area • OSPC is happy to host any marine forecaster who wishes to be part of the new Exchange program • OSPC looks forward to hosting 2013 GLOWM • PAN AM 2015 Games in Toronto may be an opportunity to further enhance our collaboration by being part of the forecasting team
