  1. BioEYES Symposium Presentation Jeff Meinhard

  2. BioEYES Activity The BioEYES part of the institute has been “amazing”. I am excited to share this activity with my students. I expect my students will share my enthusiasm as we are engaged in the scientific process together. I would say BioEYES has energized me to elevate my game, so to speak, for all topics of instruction.

  3. BioEYES(cont.) Another positive aspect stemmed from sharing this experience with fellow teachers. Working cooperatively with colleagues and sharing ideas really enhanced our time together throughout the week. This photo displays the enthusiasm which permeated the BioEYES activity.

  4. Modern Lab • At first, I felt like this part of the institute was the hardest and least useful for me as a 6th grade teacher. The fact that I struggled with understanding much of the material caused me to focus on just getting the procedure correct. I wondered if there were times in my classroom when my own students felt this way. Hmmmmm… • That being said, the experiments were way cool and it was evident our instructors had a passion for the topic. They also did a great job explaining things when we had questions.

  5. Modern Lab (cont.) • In terms of practical use, I may have benefitted more from a lab I could actually go back and do in my classroom with available resources. • While there were times I felt lost, I found the lab time fascinating. It was also helpful when we went on the tour of different campus facilities to tie together some of the things we experienced in the lab

  6. Pedagogy of BioEYES • Whenever you venture in to something new, it’s helpful to glean insight from those who have gone before you. Having teachers speak who had already done BioEYES in their own classroom was valuable. I appreciated them sharing the good and the bad as they discussed their experience. I can reflect on this as I look ahead in preparation for BioEYES with my students.

  7. Facility/ Lab Tours This was a chance to see first hand where research is being done as well as meeting the people doing the research. They were able to answer all the “Why would you want to do that?” questions we had. In my own classroom we talk about scientists and what they do. I now have some more resources for this discussion.
