  1. Is my mind mathematical ? Understanding concepts such as perimeter and area • Mr. Peter has a vineyard. Each day he finds all his grapes eaten by 50 birds.. Being furious, he wants to buy a special cover for his farm so that birds won’t eat the grapes. The other day 10 rabbits come and eat the grape leaves. Being more furious than ever, he also wants to build a fence for his farm so that rabbits won’t eat the grapes anymore. The farm is 6 meters in length and 5 meters in width. • What do I have to do in order to find the quantity of special cover he has to buy and how many meters of fence he has to build ? • - Which are the useless data of the problem ?

  2. “Who’s afraid of numbers?” By Catherine Bersis & Stelios Maliaritis Misconceptions about Mathematics We want students to learn how to think of Mathematics, how to combine data and select only what is necessary for the solution. All this mental practice leads to critical thought which helps students to make interdisciplinary connections. We planned the following activities as a team and we both applied them in the fifth grade.

  3. Connections with Colleagues • We presented our activities to all fifth grade colleagues and to our supervisor. • We discussed our activities with all fifth grade colleagues and we made all necessary modifications.

  4. Enthusiasm, shinning eyes Uncover student thinking Realize prior knowledge Build connections Synthesis Critical thought Team work Successes

  5. Challenges • The effectiveness of team work inside the classroom. • To overcome prior mathematical knowledge and way of thinking. • To engage all students in the procedure. • To engage students in thinking about their thinking and learning (meta cognition).

  6. We intend to implement this practice to other mathematical issues. We wish to keep on engaging students to build connections among different concepts. This will strengthen their critical thinking. We want to enhance and reinforce the effectiveness of students team work. We intend to make students able to solve various tasks based on their common logic and daily experience We want to be familiarized with the idea that it’s the way of thinking that matters and not the final result. We would like to try new approaches to mathematics and literacy. Therefore it would be quite useful and creative to keep on exchanging information and experiences. Next Steps
