  1. A New Testament Outline Spring Semester 2003 An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews Lesson Number Eleven Pastor Marvin McKenzie

  2. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • The Book of Hebrews is one of the most important and yet most difficult of the books of the Bible to grasp. • The authorship is uncertain, however, most Fundamental Scholars agree that Paul is most likely to have been its author.

  3. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • As you read the book you have to conclude that the Temple in Jerusalem was still standing and so Hebrews must have been written before 70 A.D. (when the Temple was destroyed.) • Hebrews is written to a persecuted and scattered population of Jewish Christians. • And the writer’s desire is to encourage them in their faith by telling them about some BETTER THINGS!

  4. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • I. THE BETTER THINGS • A. Christ: the better Person • 1:1-5:10 • Heb 2:9-10 • But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. • For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. (KJV)

  5. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • I. THE BETTER THINGS • A. Christ: the better Person • 1. Better than the prophets • Heb 1:1-3 • God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, • Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; • Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; (KJV)

  6. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • I. THE BETTER THINGS • A. Christ: the better Person • 2. Better than the angels • Vs 1:4-2:8 • Heb 1:4 • Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. (KJV)

  7. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • I. THE BETTER THINGS • A. Christ: the better Person • 3. Better than Moses • Vs 3:1-4:7 • Heb 3:3 • For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house. (KJV)

  8. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • I. THE BETTER THINGS • A. Christ: the better Person • 4. Better than Joshua • Vs 4:8-16 • Heb 4:8-10 • For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. • There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. • For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. (KJV)

  9. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • I. THE BETTER THINGS • A. Christ: the better Person • 5. Better than Aaron • Vs 5:1-10 • Heb 5:4-5 • And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. • So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. (KJV)

  10. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • I. THE BETTER THINGS • B. Perfection: The better purpose • 5:11-6:20 • Heb 6:1 • Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, (KJV)

  11. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • I. THE BETTER THINGS • C. Melchizedek: The better priesthood • 7:1-10:39 • 1. A better source • Heb 7:1-3 • For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; • To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; • Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. (KJV)

  12. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • I. THE BETTER THINGS • C. Melchizedek: The better priesthood • 7:1-10:39 • 2. A better sanctuary • Chapter 9 • Heb 9:11 • But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; (KJV)

  13. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • I. THE BETTER THINGS • D. Faith: The better principle • Vs 11:1-13:25 • 1. The people of faith • Heb 11:1-2 • Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. • For by it the elders obtained a good report. (KJV)

  14. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • I. THE BETTER THINGS • D. Faith: The better principle • Vs 11:1-13:25 • 2. The pattern of faith • Heb 12:1-4 • Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, • Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. • For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. • Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. (KJV)

  15. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • II. THE BETTER NOTS • A. Don’t disregard his Word • Heb 2:1-4 • Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. • For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; • How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; • God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?(KJV)

  16. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • II. THE BETTER NOTS • B. Don’t doubt His Word • Heb 3:12-13 • Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. • But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. (KJV)

  17. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • II. THE BETTER NOTS • C. Don’t depart from His Word • Heb 6:4-6 • For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, • And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, • If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.(KJV)

  18. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • II. THE BETTER NOTS • D. Don’t despise His Word • Heb 10:26-29 • For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, • But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. • He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: • Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? (KJV)

  19. Lesson Eleven: An Anonymous Epistle? - Hebrews • II. THE BETTER NOTS • E. Don’t disagree with His Word • Heb 12:25 • See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven: (KJV)
